Allegro Papagayo is an all-inclusive resort located in Costa Rica's Gulf of Papagayo. The resort has 300 rooms with rates of up to $150 per night.
Summary
In 2008, the resort was forced to temporarily close after it was discovered that it had been operating without a sewage treatment plant and was dumping its raw sewage into the Costa Rican environment.[1] The Ministry of Health declared that the hotel must be cleared and could not accept new guests or reservations.[1] At the time of the closure, sewage trucks were seen leaving the property.[1] Residents of Guanacaste Province protested against several forms of contamination originating from the waste products from the resort.[1]
The sewage problem was eventually solved and the resort was reopened by July 18, 2009.
