Allen Ellison (born November 21, 1980) is an American entrepreneur, businessman, and politician. He ran in the 2018[1] and 2020 Florida elections as the Democratic nominee for Florida's 17th congressional district. Currently, Ellison is a candidate for the United States Senate running to represent Florida in the 2022 U.S. Senate Elections.[2][3]

In 2018, Ellison ran in the special 17th Congressional Election due to the unexpected death of April Freeman, the previous Democratic nominee.[4] He won the nomination and claimed 52% of votes in the special primary election. Since electoral ballots were already printed before the general election commenced, Ellison ran without his name appearing on them. With only 28 days of campaigning, Ellison won 37.7% of the vote, losing to Florida State Senator Greg Steube.[5] In 2020, he won the Democratic Nomination again in the 17th Congressional District, earning 34% of the vote against the incumbent Representative Steube.[6]

Early life[edit]

Allen Ellison was born on November 21, 1980, in Avon Park, Florida to Earnest Hearns and Carlene Ellison. He was raised in Wauchula where his father was an auto mechanic and his mother was an instructor to people living with disabilities.[7]

Education[edit]

Ellison graduated from Hardee Senior High School in 1999. He graduated from South Florida State College in 2000 with a certification in Cosmetology.[7]

Afterward, Ellison enrolled in Florida Southern College and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science.[8] During this time, he was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity where he became the first African-American President of the local chapter.[9]

Career[edit]

Ellison’s early involvement in community organizing led to the creation of the Community Economic Council in 2003, where he served as the organization's Treasurer and later representative in Washington D.C, where he served as a lead advocate. The Council’s goal is to educate individuals on issues relating to business ownership, trade, and commerce.[7][9]

In 2014, Ellison founded The Center for Economic and Policy Development (The Center) to facilitate economic growth throughout Central Florida and other rural areas.[8] In 2018, The Center was incorporated into the Ellison Empowerment Foundation, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.[9] The Foundation’s goal is aimed at improving the lives of families and their communities. They focused on providing access to healthcare among vulnerable populations.

Personal life[edit]

Allen met his wife, Samantha, while studying at South Florida State College. On December 25, 2010, their daughter, Allanah, was born.[7]
