The Alliance for Innovation and Infrastructure (abbreviated as Aii), is an American non-partisan think tank with a mission "to help foster innovative solutions to current and future infrastructure challenges".[1][2] Aii conducts research on infrastructure policy issues to educate and advocate public debate and solutions[3] for issues affecting infrastructure safety and economic efficiency.[4][5]
History
Aii was founded in 2014 as a nonprofit think tank and advocacy group focused on U.S. infrastructure issues.[6][7] The Alliance has a 501(c)(3), the Public Institute for Facility Safety,[8] as well as a 501(c)(4) advocacy branch, the National Infrastructure Safety Foundation.[9][10] Aii focuses on issues ranging from energy and environment to transportation to telecommunications, as well as damage prevention,[11][6][12] serving as a source for other policy organizations and academics.[13][14]
Affiliations
Aii is led by a volunteer board of directors and advisory council, including former government officials and industry experts. Its founder Brigham McCown has ties to the George W. Bush administration[7] as a U.S. Department of Transportation official, including serving as the acting administrator of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.[15] Board member Robert Sumwalt served as a member of the National Transportation Safety Board under four presidential administrations.[16]
Aii participates in advocacy coalitions including the American Flood Coalition,[17] United for Infrastructure,[18] Beyond the Runway Coalition,[19] and the Rail Security Alliance.[20] Within the utility location and damage prevention field, Aii has been cited by the Infrastructure Protection Coalition in its nationwide report on waste and inefficiency in the system to protect underground utilities,[21][22] and worked with the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners.[23][24] The organization has also advocated before Congrerss for pipeline safety initiatives.[25][26] One report from Aii on the controversial topic of the Jones Act led to significant coverage, ranging from a demand for retraction[27] to being favorably cited in academic reports.[28][29]
