Allison Ritchie is a politician, community leader and advocate, who has dedicated her career to improving the lives of those in her hometown of Hobart, as well as the wider Tasmanian population.
Early Life
Allison Ritchie was born in Tasmania and grew up on Hobart's Eastern Shore. Allison attended Mornington Primary School, Clarence High School, Rosny College and the University of Tasmania. Allison's family had strong political connections as her Aunt, Carol Brown, was a Federal Senator and her Great Uncle was the State President of ALP.
Career
Allison began her political journey at the age of fourteen when she joined the Tasmanian Labor Party.
Through this experience she found a passion for policy and advocacy, and how these two combined can offer social solutions to individuals and local groups.
Allison continued to realise this vision in her subsequent role within the Labor Party, as Executive Assistant to the State Secretary of Tasmania, which she commenced in 1996. Over the next six years, Allison gained a deep understanding of the issues facing people in her State, including cost of living pressures, homelessness, access to education, child and community health and safety, infrastructure development, job creation, and support for seniors and services for people with disabilities. During this time Allison also took on the role of Southern Convenor of the Labor Women’s Network.
In 2001, Allison was able to solidify her contribution to the people of Tasmania when she was elected as the Member for Pembroke in the Legislative Council. Allison held this position for the following eight years, achieving the following appointments:
· Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer.
· Parliamentary Secretary for Economic Development.
· Member of State Government Budget Committee.
· Minister for Planning and Workplace Relations.
While in office, Allison also served three years as a board member of Oakdale Services Tasmania, an organisation providing accommodation and service to people with disability and served as a long term patron for the Association for Children with Disability and as an active member and supporter of many other community organisations.
In the years following her departure from Legislative Council, Allison has engaged in numerous volunteer roles, including as the Assistant Secretary of the Clarence RSL Women’s Auxiliary; she is the founder and President of lobby group “People Protecting Children”, and has been tireless in highlighting systemic failures while achieving improved protections for children, notably in her work campaigning for the now-active Commission of Inquiry into the Tasmanian Government's Responses to Child Sexual Abuse in Institutional Settings.
Allison has earned a reputation for delivering strong, effective advocacy for community matters, close to the heart of the people she has lived with and worked with her whole life. In her current role as the General Manager of the Hobart Police and Community Youth Club, Allison’s focus is on improving the health and wellbeing of at-risk youth. The club provides low-cost, sporting, recreational, social and cultural programs in a safe environment to young people, with these programs bettering their families and the Hobart community as a whole.
Allison is also the President of Boxing Tasmania, the only body affiliated with Boxing Australia to provide a pathway for Tasmanian athletes to compete at the Commonwealth and Olympic Games.
