AllMusic (previously known as All Music Guide and AMG) is an online music database. It catalogs more than 3 million album entries and 30 million tracks, as well as information on musical artists and bands. It launched in 1991, predating the World Wide Web.

History[edit]

AllMusic was launched as All Music Guide by Michael Erlewine, a compulsive archivist, noted astrologer, Buddhist scholar and musician. In the early '90s, as CDs replaced vinyl, Erlewine purchased a CD of early recordings by Little Richard but found it disappointing. Frustrated, he researched using meta data to create a music guide. In 1990, he founded All Music Guide to create an open access database for every recording since Enrico Caruso.

The first All Music Guide was a 1,200-page reference book with a CD-ROM. Its first digital iteration in 1991 was a text-based Gopher site, later moving to the World Wide Web. Erlewine hired Vladimir Bogdanov to design the framework and Stephen Thomas Erlewine to develop editorial content. The site featured 1,400 subgenres of music.

In 1996, Alliance Entertainment Corp. bought All Music for $3.5 million. Alliance filed for bankruptcy in 1999, and its assets were acquired by Ron Burkle's Yucaipa Equity Fund. In 1999, All Music relocated to Ann Arbor, expanding its staff and catalog.

In 2007, AllMusic was purchased by TiVo Corporation (then Macrovision). In 2015, it was acquired by BlinkX (later RhythmOne). The AllMusic database is powered by a combination of MySQL and MongoDB.

The All Music Guide series[edit]

The All Media Network produced the AllMusic guide series, including the AllMusic Guide to Rock and the All Music Guide to Jazz. Vladimir Bogdanov is the president of the series.

Reception[edit]

In August 2007, PC Magazine included AllMusic in its "Top 100 Classic Websites" list.
