Allstar PZL Glider Sp.z o.o. is a Polish glider manufacturer. The company emerged from the state-owned glider company SZD (Szybowcowy Zaklad Doswiadczalny) and is headquartered in Bielsko-Biała. Allstar PZL Glider produces several SZD aircraft types for training, aerobatics and cross-country flight.

History[edit]

After the political and structural changes in Poland in the 1990s, the company was founded in 2002.[1] Several SZD-glider models from PZL Bielsko were brought into production again and glider constructions developments were brought into certification. The company is located in the production facilities of the main site of the former state glider manufacturer SZD in Bielsko-Biała.

The beginning of SZD goes back to 1946, when the Instytut Szybownictwa (Institute for Glider Flying) was founded in Bielsko-Biała. This development and prototype Workshop with a design office was renamed into SZD - Szybowcowy Zaklad Doswiadczalny (Glider Experimantal Facility) in 1948. It was run by the ZSLS (Department of Sport Equipment Plants) in Warsaw. When the ZSLS was restructured in the 1960s SZD changed to a sailplane production plant. The location in Bielsko-Biała became headquarter and was joint with the sailplane factories ZSLS no. 4 in Wroclaw and ZSLS no. 2 in Jeżów under the Name Zakłady Szybowcowe Delta-Bielsko (Glider Factory Delta-Bielsko). The enlarged manufacturer of gliders exported its glider worldwide.[2] Well-known glider types such as Pirat, Puchacz and the Jantar series come from the company.

Company today[edit]

Allstar PZL Glider is based in Bielsko-Biała on the former headquarters of SZD with access to Alexandrowice Airport (EPBA). The company is certified by the EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) as a Design Organization (ADOA) and Production Organization (POA) according to EASA regulation 21.[3][4] The company is the owner of the type certifictions and manufacturer of these current SZD gliders: SZD-59-1 Acro, SZD-55-1 Nexus, SZD-54-1 Perkoz, SZD 51-1 Junior, SZD-50-3 Puchacz and SZD- 48-3 Jantar. Allstar PZL Glider supports the holders of the aforementioned SZD types in technical aspects.[5]

Types of aircraft[edit]

SZD-54-2 Perkoz[edit]

SZD-54-2 Perkoz is a two-seater glider for pilot training in clubs and flight schools. The wingspan of 17.5 meter wings and flat wing tips is used for aerobatic training and spin instruction. The 20 meter-version with Winglets is used for cross-country flights.[6][7] The Perkoz is the successor of the training two-seater SZD-50-3 Puchacz. Its production was discontinued in 2014.[8] Allstar PZL Glider received EASA certification of the Perkoz (17.5 meters) as an aerobatic glider in 2010. The 20-meter wing span was approved by EASA in 2014.[9]

SZD-55-1 Nexus[edit]

SZD-55-1 Nexus (Promyk) is a standard class glider with a wingspan of 15 meters. The glider is a complete fiberglass construction and has a very low empty weight and a special elliptical wing outline.[10]

SZD-59-1 Acro[edit]

SZD-59-1 Acro is a single-seat glider for unlimited aerobatics and cross-country flight. The aerobatic plane has a basic wingspan of 13.2 meters with flat wing ends. The wingspan of 15 meters and 16.5 meters with winglets is used for cross-country flights. The glider is based on the SZD-48-3 Jantar Standard 3.[11] The aerobatic and cross-country version was certified by EASA in 2016.[12]

SZD-51-1 Junior[edit]

SZD-51-1 Junior is a single-seat club-class glider for training and the first solo flights.

Development projects[edit]

An electric propulsion system for gliders is developed by Allstar PZL Glider under the name Allstar-e-motion and initially designed as a sustainer for the SZD-55-1 Nexus. A proof-of-concept of the electric sustainer in front configuration was presented at the "Aero" Messe Friedrichshafen 2019.[13]
