The Almageller Hut is an Alpine mountain hut belonging to the Niesen section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It is located in the Valais Alps, in the Wysstal subvalley of the Almagellertal below the Dri Horlini. The valley town is Saas-Almagell in Valais.

Built in 1984, the Almageller Hut is the SAC's newest hut that does not replace an older hut (cf. the Monte Rosa Hut, opened in 2009).[1]

The Almageller Hut is a base camp for the popular glacier-free approach to the Weissmies via the Zwischbergen Pass (3,268 m) and the Weissmies South Ridge.[2][3][4][5] The Saas Almagell-Gondo hike via the Zwischbergen Pass is also possible as a two-day tour.

Access

The hut can be reached from Saas Almagell via various routes in about 4.5 hours. The most popular is the mule track, which is paved with rough stone slabs for long stretches between the Almagelleralp mountain restaurant (2,194 m) and the hut.[6][7]

The ascent can be shortened by about 45 minutes by taking the cable car to Furggstalden (1,901 m). An adventure trail also begins at Furggstalden, which requires a head for heights.[6]
