Dr Alok Roy[1] is the founder of one of eastern India’s most reputed chains of hospitals, Medica Group of Hospitals. A former Nuclear Cardiologist from AIIMS, New Delhi, Dr Roy was voted as one of ‘The 20 topmost influential healthcare professionals of India’ by Indian Express in 2011.

Background

Dr Roy contributed to establishing numerous healthcare facilities across the country – Fortis Hospital, Noida, BM Birla Heart Institute (Kolkata), Manipal Heart Foundation (Bangalore), Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (Kolkata) and Narayana Hrudayalaya (Bangalore), to name a few. The Integrated Telemedicine and Tele-health Project (ITTP) and the Yeshasvini Health Insurance Scheme are ventures implemented by him. In 2006 he founded the healthcare company Medica Syndergie Pvt Ltd in collaboration with a group of entrepreneurs. Dr Roy has also served as the President (a first ever from the healthcare industry) of the prestigious Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI)[2] a 150 year old Institution.

Personal

Born in a middle class family in Allahabad, Dr Roy completed his higher education in Orissa and New Delhi. His initial career choice saw a shift when, after joining B. M. Birla Hospital in Kolkata as a Senior Nuclear Cardiologist, he got involved in the commissioning of the city’s first heart hospital and realized his calling was hospital building and administration. Dr Roy’s wife, Ms Kavita Roy, a neurodevelopmental therapist, was instrumental in setting up the Physical Therapy & Rehab unit of Medica Hospitals, and his sons, Dr Aviral Roy[3] and Mr Gandharv Roy hold responsible positions in Medica.
