Alon Carmel is an Israeli-American serial technology and social entrepreneur.[1][2] He is best known as co-founder of Jdate.com[4] (now a part of Spark Networks digital media conglomerate),[3] an online dating service mostly for Jewish people, and other technology startups and ventures, including AniView and Affluent Analytics.[5][6]

Early life[edit]

Alon Carmel was born and raised in Haifa, Israel.[2] After serving in the IDF, Carmel graduated from the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in 1980 with the degree in Practical Civil Engineering,[1] and moved to the United States in 1981, where he began his entrepreneurial career there.[1] He currently lives with his family in Tel Aviv, Israel. Carmel has two children from the previous marriage.[2]

Business career[edit]

After working occasional jobs, Carmel engaged in real estate business earning $100 million by early 1990s. He changed his career venue during the real estate market crisis in the US after he met Joe Shapira and they launched a video manufacturing company that was sold in 1996.[1][4]

Jdate.com[edit]

Carmel founded Jdate.com in 1997 along with Joe Shapira.[2] The company was later incorporated as Matchnet PLC and rapidly expanded in the Jewish online dating market outside of Israel.[2] Within two years, the company acquired AmericanSingles.com.[2] Matchnet raised approximately $50 million, including in an IPO of its shares on the Frankfurt (Germany) Stock Exchange, using these funds to consolidate the internet dating space during 2000–2005 via 12 acquisitions totaling more than $30 million.[1] Leveraging on this acquisition as well as creative large-scale marketing techniques, Matchnet reached a customer base of 20 million by late 2000s. Carmel and his partner Shapira also led the expansion of Jdate into Israel and the later acquisition of its main Israeli competitor, Cupid.co.il.[7] Now JDate is part of Spark Networks, a conglomerate of dating companies.[3][8]

Aniview[edit]

In 2013, Carmel established AniView LTD in Israel, and then AniView INC in New York, a startup company developing video player technology for streaming video advertising on websites, TV and mobile apps.[5][9] The company also specializes in preventing cybersecurity risks in digital advertising for agencies.[10] In 2020, the company collaborated with White Ops, a bot-mitigation platform, and integrated its technology to fend off bot attacks.[5] The company also teams up with HUMAN Security Inc. on collective protection against sophisticated bot attacks and fraud.

Jerusalem Post notes: " Aniview represents just the latest Israeli ad-tech company to expand into the US market."[5]

Other ventures[edit]

In 2016-2021, Carmel was a chairman of Affluent Analytics, a data aggregator startup based in Nashville, Tennessee, that was acquired by Impact in spring 2021.[11]
