Amararam Gujar (also spelt Gurjar) is an Indian diplomat and civil servant. In April 2025, he was appointed as the High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Malawi. He is an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 2008 batch and has previously served in various diplomatic roles across Egypt, Oman, Portugal, and Italy.[1]

Early Life and Education

Amararam was born on June 28, 1977, in Pali, Rajasthan, India. He comes from a humble rural background and pursued his education with determination despite financial challenges. Growing up in a desert environment, he walked about 5 km each day to attend school under harsh climatic conditions.[2]

Due to financial challenges, he took up small jobs to support his education. He completed his schooling (graduated in 1993) by achieving top marks in his class. His father, constrained by financial realities, did not encourage his ambition to become an engineer; instead, he eventually pursued a B.A. degree.

He holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Ajmer University in Rajasthan. He is fluent in English, Hindi, and Arabic.

Career

As a youth, he achieved 36th rank in the Rajasthan Teacher Training examination and held several government jobs before embarking on his diplomatic career.

Before joining the Indian Foreign Service, Gujar worked in multiple government roles, including as a teacher, a police officer, and a station master in Rajasthan.[3]

Entry Into Foreign Service

Gujar cleared the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination and earned a place in the Indian Foreign Service in 2008. His first overseas posting was at the Embassy of India in Cairo, where he served from 2010 to 2012. From 2012 to 2016, he worked at the Embassy of India in Muscat as Second Secretary (Press, Information & Education) and as Commercial Representative.

Between 2016 and 2020, he was posted to the Indian Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal, where he served as Head of Chancery and Commercial Representative.

From 2020 to 2022, he worked at the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi in the Central Europe Division and later in the East & Southern Africa Division.

In January 2023, he became the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Rome, Italy.

Diplomatic and Administrative Roles

He has held multiple posts in India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), including:

Deputy Secretary for Central Europe (responsible for diplomatic relations with Central European countries), Director for East & South Africa (E&SA) in the MEA (from January 2021), and Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Italy, where he worked to strengthen cultural, trade, and technological cooperation between India and Italy.

High Commissioner to Malawi

On April 15, 2025, Amararam Gujar was appointed as the High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Malawi.[4] On 25 August 2025, he formally presented his Letters of Credence to Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera, officially commencing his role. In this role, he has focused on promoting economic diplomacy between India and Malawi, especially in areas like food processing to add value to Malawi’s agricultural produce rather than exporting raw materials. He also emphasizes enhancing educational cooperation and investment in Malawi's sectors.[5]

He has encouraged adding value to Malawi’s agricultural output through processing rather than exporting raw produce. He has also advocated for stronger cooperation in skills development and technology transfer.

He sees the India-Malawi relationship as entering a “new chapter,” with emphasis on leveraging India’s development partnerships and capacity building to foster sustainable growth in Malawi.

Vision and Initiatives

Gujar’s strategy in Malawi revolves around transforming the agricultural sector through value addition, encouraging agro-processing industries, and thereby maximizing returns for farmers and the economy.[6]

He proposes strengthening India–Malawi educational collaborations, skill development, and investment flows aligned with Malawi’s priorities.

Throughout his diplomatic career, he has been associated with trade facilitation, cultural diplomacy, and policy dialogues around sustainable development, climate action, and public health.

Personal Life

Amararam Gujar is married to Kamla Devi. They have three children.
