Ambrose Anoruo

Ambrose Anoruo is an environmental scientist and a professor at Texas A&M Kingsville. He is best known for remarkable improvements to higher education and research, both through founding a peer-reviewed scientific journal as well as the creation of research centers.

Early life and education[edit]

Anoruo started his post secondary education at the Federal College of Forest Technology, Ibadan, Nigeria where he completed his undergraduate education in 1980. In 1982, he left Nigeria for the United States on Federal Government of Nigeria Postgraduate Scholarship for MS degree in Forestry at the Yale School for the Environment at Yale University. He also holds a second MS degree in Environmental Science from Southern Connecticut State University. In 1985, Anoruo returned to the Yale School for the Environment for the Doctor of Forestry degree in Plant Physiological Ecology.

Career[edit]

Anoruo has made significant contributions to higher education in the United States in the fields of agriculture, the environment and ecology. He initiated the National Conference on Agriculture and Natural Resource Conservation and Management[1] at Delaware State University. He was a member of the State of Delaware Governor’s Council on Forestry. He served on the Delaware State University Innovative Technologies Committee. As Professor at South Carolina State University, Dr. Anoruo founded the Savannah River Environmental Sciences Field Station which later became a USDA Center of Excellence in Environmental Sciences Education and Research. He secured the Delaware State University’s membership at the Chesapeake Watershed Cooperative Ecosystems Study Unit. His idea of a Center for Agriculture and Natural Resource Conservation at the College of Agriculture and Related Sciences, Delaware State University gave birth to the Center for Integrated Biological and Environmental Research. Prof. Anoruo is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Environmental Monitoring and Restoration. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Sustainable Forestry. Dr. Anoruo has won many United States of America national awards including Who’s Who Among America’s Professors, The National Harmer Award from the Office of the Vice President of the United States, and The Government Seamless Award from the United States Forest Service. Dr. Anoruo serves on the Leadership Council of the Yale University School for the Environment. He was a member of the Science and Technology Committee of the Experimental Station Council on Organization and Policy of the Board of Agriculture Assembly (BAA).

Research and professional organizations[edit]

Prof Anoruo has authored many peer reviewed scientific journal articles and book chapters. Dr. Anoruo has also attracted well over $20 million dollars of externally funded projects in personal and collaborative research efforts.[2] Anoruo belongs to several professional organizations including Sigma XI, The Scientific Research Society of America, Yale Chapter; Botanical Society of America; Organization of Biological Field Stations; American Association for the Advancement of Science; Society of Wetland Scientists; and the American Society for Horticultural Science.

Awards and leadership[edit]

Anoruo is an advocate for people of color in environmental sciences, and has received many awards acknowledging his efforts. He has served in leadership roles at HBCUs, including Associate Dean for Research, College of Agriculture and Related Sciences, Delaware State University, and professor at South Carolina State University. His many awards include the Senior Faculty Teaching Award by the College of Agriculture, Natural Resources & Human Sciences, Texas A&M University-Kingsville, the Hodge Hall Pride Award for being selected President of Faculty Senate, South Carolina State University, and the National Hammer Award from the Office of the Vice President of the United States for work performed at the Savannah River Environmental Sciences Field Station.
