Amel Younis is a lightweight rower from Boston, United States who represented State of Palestine.[1] in the lightweight single at the 2022 World Rowing Championships in Račice (Litoměřice District), Czech Republic and 2023 World Rowing Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.
In both world championships, Amel placed 26th in the lightweight men's single[2]. He also placed 4th at the 2023 World Indoor Rowing Championships in Mississauga, Canada, in the lightweight men's category.[3]
Early Life & Education
Younis was born and raised in the United States. He started rowing in high school in Worcester, Massachusetts, at Doherty Memorial High School[4]. Younis later rowed at Mercyhurst University[5] and Riverside Boat Club[6]
Identity & Representation
Amel Younis is American (see Americans), as a descendant from both Palestinian and Irish (see Irish people) heritage.[7] [8] He was quoted stating the following reason for representing Palestine: “I always wanted to represent Palestine; that was always a dream of mine. My father was a refugee, my family members were refugees, and they had been through a lot in their lifetimes,” said Younis, who noticed a lack of Arab-American figures in sports, movies, and popular culture. “I'm in a unique position to be that guy I always wish that I saw. I see an opportunity for me to be that person for other Arabs, Arab-Americans, and Palestinians around the world.”[9][10]
