Amelie G. Ramirez(DrPH) is a professor and interim chair of epidemiology and biostatistics at at The University of Texas Health Science Center Austin where she is a director of the Institute for Health Promotion Research. Her interests are behavioral health communication and and promotion research.[1]

Dr. Ramirez received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Houston and later earned her masters public health (MPH) with a specialization in in Health Services Administration and later her PHD in Health Promotion both from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston[1]

Everett M. Rodgers Public Health Communication Award[edit]

In 2014, Dr. Ramirez was the co-recipient of the Everett M. Rogers Public Health Communication Award from the American Public Health Association for her work developing the theoretical dual-link communication model.[2]

Dual-Link Communication[edit]

Dr. Ramirez's research led to the development of the theoretical, dual-link communication model.This model uses both the implementation of behavioral journalism techniques, and the use of "culturally relevant peer models" as a medium to ultimately strengthen mass media messages, as a result enhancing access to care, preventative screening rates, and healthy behavioral changes, thereby increasing the efficacy of health communication campaigns..[2]

Breast Cancer Prevention in Hispanic Women[edit]

Dr. Ramirez's extensive research studies into the underlying reasons why the incidence of breast cancer in hispanic women was higher than that of different populations and how to combat this, identified innovative intervention and communication strategies that have become instrumental in mitigating breast cancer within hispanic women. For this research she was awarded the American Cancer Society Humanitarian Award.
