He is well known by his nick name Assefa Maru. He was born on 1958 in Addis Ababa. His father was an active soldier in Eritrea and died in a battle when he was just 2. He joined the Ethiopian military in the beginning of the 1990’s. He graduated from Addis Ababa School of Commerce with a diploma, got a Bachelor degree from Kotebe Teachers College and a diploma on sport science from Germany.

He has got his military education from the well-known and renowned Harar Military Academy. He was a decorated graduate, receiving a prize from the hands of the then President Mengistu Hailemariam. He worked in the military from the early 1990’s to the 2005 election. By then he was suspected of aligning with the then runner up Coalition for Unity and Democracy (CUD). He fled persecution in 2007 and settled in Kenya. He worked as head of Ginbot 7 movement in Kenya. Later heading the overall Ginbot 7 African resistance against the TPLF government. He joined the forces in Eritrea and worked as military operations head. He kept his position as military head after the formation of Patriotic Ginbot 7 Movement for Unity and Democracy. He was the most determined and militaristic of all with skill and persistence and contributed much for the struggle.
