Amer Albayati (1942 in Bagdad) is an Iraqi-Austrian journalist and author. He lives in Vienna since 1980. He’s an expert in Islamism and focuses especially on radical Islamism, furthermore, he fights for the liberalisation and reformation of religion. He founded the “Initiative Liberaler Muslime Österreich (ILMÖ) and was one of the founding fathers of the United Nations Correspondents Association Vienna (UNCAV)

Growing up in Iraq Amer was the second of four sons and one sister. He was born in a middle class family in Bagdad. His parents worked in their own restaurant. During his time in school, Amer wrote for the school magazine. At the age of 15, Amer already wrote as a special youth journalist for several local newspapers. After the first Iraqi revolution in 1958 he received access to world famous literature through his uncle’s library. He read literature from the likes of Goethe, Kant, Sartre and Marx.

Work as a photographer – Studies at the university of film and TV In the early 1960s Albayati moved to West-Berlin. He made money as a free photographer taking pictures of the beautiful local culture. Starting in 1965, he studied at the “Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen Konrad Wolf“ in East-Berlin. His girlfriend at the time, Brigitte, gave birth to their first child, a girl called Ines. After a visit to the doctor, Albayati was denied to leave the country, because according to the Iraqi agency he had not served his compulsory military service. After trying to flee the country, Albayati was imprisoned and sent to Basra. Work as a movie director Being a free man again, Amer Albayati had to set up a new life in Bagdad. In the following years he worked as a movie and TV director for several Iraqi media companies. Besides working as a director he also opened a tailoring shop, as well as, a barber shop, additionally he also worked in antique trade. After one of his movies was censored by the newly arisen Saddam Hussein regime, he fled the country in 1980.
