American Chestnut Restoration (ACR) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to producing a blight-resistant American chestnut. They are partnering with SUNY ESF to develop the Darling 54 transgenic tree.
History
ACR was founded in 1988 as the New York State Chestnut Foundation by Herb Darling, Jane Darling, Stan Wirsig, and Arlene Wirsig. In 1989, it joined The American Chestnut Foundation (TACF) as the New York Chapter, becoming the first official chapter of TACF. In March 2025, TACF ended their relationship with NY-TACF due to NY-TACF's continued support of SUNY ESF's transgenic research,[1] so NY-TACF rebranded as American Chestnut Restoration.
