American Contact Dermatitis Society
The American Contact Dermatitis Society (ACDS)[1] is a professional medical society primarily focused on the study, evaluation, and treatment of contact dermatitis, including the use of patch testing in the diagnosis of contact allergy. This diagnostic test has shown a demonstrable benefit for patients with contact dermatitis.[2] The Society has more than 1000 members, mostly dermatologists practicing in the United States and Canada.
It was founded in 1989 by Robert Adams, MD.[3]
The official journal of the Society is "Dermatitis" published by of Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins, a division of Wolters Kluwer Health.[4]
Each year since 2000, the ACDS names an Allergen of the Year to bring attention to a chemical that causes skin reactivity. Physicians and patients can benefit from awareness of these allergens; patch testing can identify a patient's allergens, allowing avoidance and definitive cure of allergic contact dermatitis.[5]
The ACDS identifies physician experts who work to make products safer with numerous national organizations, such as the Personal Care Products Council and the Nickel Institute. For example, a meeting co-sponsored by the Nickel Institute and the ACDS in Chicago in June 2015 brought together experts in numerous fields (medicine, metallurgy, epidemiology) from the US and Europe to discuss strategies to reduce the risk of allergic sensitization to nickel.[6] The ACDS is a member of the International League of Dermatological Societies.
