The American Long Distance Hikers Association - West (also called ALDHA-West) is a non-profit organization founded in 1993[1] as a west-coast-based sister organization to the Appalachian Long Distance Hikers Association (which holds its meetings and sponsors activities primarily in the eastern United States).[2] ALDHA-West's mission is "to inspire, educate and promote fellowship among long distance hikers and those who support long-distance hiking."[3][4] It serves as a media information source for journalists writing about long-distance backpacking and maintains a database of hikers who have completed the "Triple Crown of Hiking," meaning that they have completed hikes of the entire Appalachian, Pacific Crest, and Continental Divide National Scenic Trails.[5]

Activities[edit]

ALDHA-West sponsors an annual gathering of long-distance hikers, held in different destinations throughout the West that are close to long-distance hiking trails[6]. The meeting features a series of lectures, slide shows, and workshops about trails worldwide, and holds an awards ceremony for the newest list of Triple Crown hikers.[7] In his guidebook, The Pacific Crest Trail, author Jeffrey Shaffer notes the organization's promotion of communication and information-sharing between long distance hikers and recommends its annual conference as an educational opportunity for hikers from all over the country to learn about trails both in the United States and around the world.[8]

The organization also sponsors several smaller "rucks" each year in locations around the West. ("Ruck" is a German word meaning "backpack." The term is used in the American long-distance hiking community to describe an event that helps backpackers prepare for a journey). In the ALDHA-West rucks, hikers share information about such practical topics as gear, food, safety, navigation, and Leave no Trace principles[9][10][11] During Covid-19, the ALDHA-West rucks were held online.

ALDHA-West also publishes an online Gazette four times a year, which contains trail updates, gear news, and other information of interest to long-distance backpackers.
