The Amiga Tabor is an upcoming computer manufactured by the British company A-EON Technology, and the first new Amiga-computer developed since 2015 when A-EON released the Amiga X5000[1]. The computer, which bears the model number "A1222", is only comprised of a 170 * 170 mm motherboard based on the PowerPC-architecture QorIQ P1022. For full functionality, end users have to supply their own accessories such as RAM memory, SSD storage media, keyboards and mice.

Technical specifications[edit]

The Tabor can utilize up to 8 GB of DDR3 RAM through a 64-bit bus clocked at 400 MHz. Apart from an RGMII-type Ethernet port for network connectivity, the Amiga Tabor is also equipped with four USB ports and an RS-232 compatible serial port.

To allow hard disk storage, the Amiga Tabor features two SATA 2.6-compatible control units. Even more storage can be obtained using the computer's onboard Micro SD-slot, allowing memory cards to be used.

Using a PCI-bus, x4 PCIe and x16 PCIe expansion cards can be used with the Tabor. Cards supported by the Tabor's primary operating system AmigaOS include graphics cards from AMD's Radeon-series. The computer does, however, also sport built-in graphic circuitry supporting graphic resolutions up to 1280 * 1024 pixels with a 24-bit color depth viewable on HDMI 1.3-compatible computer monitors. To allow for sound output, the Tabor supports I2S digital stereo audio.

The Amiga Tabor also features, like many other motherboards, pins allowing a computer case to show various operations such as hard disk activity using LEDs.

Similar to systems like the Raspberry Pi, the computer is also equipped with a GPIO-compatible port to allow connectivity with experimental hardware and home made projects.

Operating system[edit]

Like previous Amiga models, the Amiga Tabor runs the AmigaOS operating system. Unlike older releases (having version numbers starting with 1, 2 and 3), the Tabor hosts a newly developed version designated 4.1, custom made for PowerPC CPUs. Despite this shift in software architecture, the computer retains compatibility with older versions of AmigaOS targeted for the Motorola 68000 series of CPUs with the help of a so-called just in time compiler. AmigaOS 4.1 is based on a whole new core ("ExecSG") that features, among others, 64-bit RAM addressing, a more powerful command-line interface, the Python programming language and other enhancements.[2]

About the development[edit]

The Amiga Tabor was announced on October 15th, 2019[3], and has since undergone closed beta testning. In December 2019, A-EON announced[4] that the project had reached enough maturity to allow for a limited manufacturing run of 100 "Plus Limited Edition" units. This first way of distribution is meant to reach the public during the first quarter of 2020. In the same press release, it was also determined that the extended beta test period was attributed to supply problems involving obsolete hardware components, that had to be replaced.
