Amin Refaat is an Egyptian-American author, Quranic reform scholar, translator, novelist, and nonprofit executive. He serves as the Executive Vice President of the International Quranic Center (IQC) and the President of ARFIR – The Amin Refaat Foundation for Islamic Reform. Refaat is also known as the principal English translator, editor, and publisher of the works of Ahmed Subhy Mansour — a former Al-Azhar scholar, former MIT affiliate, and human-rights advocate who testified before the United States Congress.
Refaat is the author of Islam Misunderstood – America Is Where Real Islam Thrives, the multi-volume Stories of the Prophets in the Quran series, and a collection of philosophical and literary books including God! Why?, God! Who?, Talking to God, Purity, Nobility of the Blade, and So What Is Love After All?.
Early life and education
Amin Refaat was born on May 6 in Alexandria, Egypt. He earned his Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree from Alexandria University, followed by a Master of Arts (MA) degree from the American University in Cairo (AUC).
In addition to his academic degrees, Refaat trained in several technical and artistic fields, including audio/video engineering, gemology, and perfume formulation.
Career
Business leadership
Refaat held a number of senior business leadership positions, including:
- Vice President of Near East General Agencies in Alexandria, Egypt
- Founder and Executive Manager of El-Mimary Real Estate Investment Co. in Dubai, UAE
- President of AAR, Inc. in Los Angeles, California
- President of El-Mimary Invest Inc. in Indiana, United States
He also served as the sole Egyptian distributor for several international brands, including Martin Merkel GmbH, Klipsch, Monster Cable, MTX Audio, Concord, Pyle Drivers, Recoton, and Zapco.
Consulting and international trade
As a business consultant, Refaat worked on strategic planning, organizational development, and leadership systems. His consulting clients included El-Mimary Group in Egypt and H.H. Sheikh Hamad Bin Mohammad Al-Thani of the Qatari Royal Family. He also worked extensively in international trade between the United States and the Middle East.
Real estate development
Refaat has been involved in real estate development projects in Egypt, the United States, and Dubai, focusing on land development, investment analysis, and commercial and residential property planning.
Technical and artistic expertise
Refaat has additional professional experience in audio/video engineering, gemology, perfume design, classic car and motorcycle restoration, and competitive sailboat racing.
Religious leadership
Refaat served as Imam of the Grand Rapids Islamic Center in Michigan and the King Fahd Mosque in Los Angeles. He was also a Muslim chaplain in Michigan state institutions, California state institutions, and United States Federal Penitentiaries.
Retirement and nonprofit work
After decades in business, consulting, and religious service, Refaat retired from commercial activities to devote himself fully to Quranic reform, nonprofit leadership, publishing, deradicalization education, and global outreach.
