Amina Zoubir
Amina Zoubir is a contemporary artist, filmmaker and performer born in 1983 at Algiers in Algeria. She is well known as a feminist performer through video-actions titled Take your place [1] she has directed in 2012 during the 50th anniversary of Algerian independence, aiming to question gender issues and women conditions in Algerian society. She has worked with different art mediums such as sculpture, drawing, installation art, performance and video art. Her work relates the notions of body language in specific spaces of North Africa territories.
Biography
Amina Zoubir is a French-Algerian [[1]] visual artist based between Paris, France and Algiers, Algeria. She was raised in a family of scientists and artists, her mother Hania is doctor of medecine and researcher at the Pierre & Marie Curie Center at Hospital Mustapha Pacha in Algiers, while her father Hellal Zoubir[2] a notable painter and designer based in Algeria. She obtained the DESA degree of graphic design in 2006 at the Superior School of Fine Arts of Algiers [[2]], Algeria. She moved to Paris in France in 2007 to develop her artistic research and practice where she was graduated Master of Theory and Practice of Contemporary Art and New Media in 2009 at University Paris VIII[[3]]. She directed in 2006 a first documetary film as a performative video-action titled Take the bus and look [3], developping an incipient reflection on the relationship between individuals, art and cinema in the early turmoil of a society raising after a collective trauma of civil war.
In 2010, she published her academic research as a book titled video art of Algerian artists - Relation de l’image et du son dans la vidéo contemporaine algérienne : une expérience en temps réel. [4] She is currently pursuing a Ph.D research at the AIAC laboratory at University Paris VIII. Her research and practice question the notions of body language in specific spaces where religious, social and political codifications are applied to define a body typology in North Africa territories.
In 2012, she directed and performed six feminist actions conducted in specific urban spaces at Moorish coffee salons, streets, soccer stadiums, beaches, hair salons and clothes markets, where women are facing a gender aparthied at Algiers, Algeria, entitled Take your place brodcasted on channel TV5 Monde and online on webdocumentary platform Un été à Alger meaning A Summer in Algiers, produced by narrative [5] (Paris) and Une chambre à soi (Algiers) [6] with support of CNC France, Centre national du cinéma et de l'image animée [7] and medias Algérie Focus, Libération France, Channel TV5 Monde Africa. Her exploration of female representation in North Africa show a fundamental need for reliable images of women living in the country nowaday and female presence in public space.
Career
Amina Zoubir grew up in Algeria amid civil war tensions that she witnessed with her family, this experience influences a resilience presented in her work which aims to create a dialogue to heal the social body of Algerian society. She was affected in Algiers by the tensions of gender issues and decided younger, while she was 17 years old, to study art at the Superior School of Fine Arts of Algiers [[4]], where director Ahmed Asselah and his son Rabah were murdered on March 5th, 1994 during the civil war.[8]
Amina Zoubir is well-known as Algerian feminist performer with video-actions titled Take your place [9] that she directed and performed herself in 2012 on chosen urban spaces to denounce gender apartheid applied on women in the Algerian society. She directed in 2006 her first short documentary titled Take the bus and look few year after Algeria quit the civil war, seen as a documentary video whose body of the artist interacts by its relation to the others, through the eyes of the bus passengers, wandering around the city of Algiers a typography of the report of the inhabitants to their displacement in the city is drawn, one observes and the watcher looked at a typology of body behavior in the post-decade 90's, period of terrorism in Algeria, a hardness of the look of the other is accompanied by a gentle poetry of being conjugating through the look of the artist.
While her artworks are interrogating the postcolonial gaze by means of documentary and video art, she started to create a corpus of performance, photography, video, installation and drawings which developped a moved on poetic look on the body, articulated in situations favoring the positioning of who look is looked. Her art reveals and deconstructs the body languages, positionings and tensions envolving the imagination of individuals in a predetermined spaces, according to the sociocultural, ethnopsychical and political contexts, through poetics and myths in the Maghreb (North Africa).
Amina Zoubir is one of the five artist who represented Algeria in 2019 at the first Algerian pavilion in the 58th Venice Biennale, Venice, Italy. The Algerian pavilion [10] was officially registered by the Ministery of Culture of Algeria at the Venice Biennale, therefore the instable political situation related to Hirak (massive mouvement of popular demonstration for political change) urge President Abdel Aziz Bouteflika to resign on April 2nd, 2020 pushing the Minister of Culture to withdrew on April 4th financial support [11] and decided to defer [12] Algeria’s official participation at Venice Biennale, with no regard to all the work that artists had done to organize their project titled Time to shine bright. Despite the turmoil, the project of the Algerian pavilion titled Time to shine bright was conducted with success [13], supported by private Algerian sponsors [14] as an autonomous artists action, that took place [15] during the 58th Venice Biennale [16] from May 9th to November 24th, 2020.
As a vehicle for awakening consciousness, the artworks of Amina Zoubir were exhibited in several worldwide biennals and group exhibitions in Museums, Art Fairs, Galleries, Auctions [17] and Art Centers.

Statement
Amina Zoubir works on the notions of body in specific spaces to question social, political and historical thoughts in North Africa. The concepts developed through her works request the notions, the positionings and the tensions of body language. her intention seeks to create images and situations to embellish this moment of distance from the ordinary physical standards, to reveal an esthetics of the performative action operated by the artist, whose intervention of the imbalance, aims at thwarting the established order and at lifting the dissimulation of the imagination.
Award
Amina ZOUBIR was awarded the price Varenne FIGRA France in 2013 with a special motion for her performances Take your place, A Summer in Algiers webdocumentary, directed in 2012 at Algiers, Algeria.
