Amir Siraj
Amir Siraj is an American astrophysicist.[1][2] He is a student at Harvard University and the New England Conservatory of Music.[3][4][5] He was named the youngest scientist on the 2021 Forbes 30 Under 30 list.[6] Siraj's research pertains to interstellar objects,[7][8][9][10] the Solar System,[11][12][13][14] comets and asteroids,[15][16][17] extrasolar planetary systems,[18][19] black holes,[20] and supernovae.[21] He is a classical pianist and young Steinway Artist.[22][23][24]
Siraj demonstrated that the Chicxulub impactor, which led to the extinction of the dinosaurs, could be a fragment of a long-period comet that was tidally disrupted by the Sun, since such a scenario would solve the tension theoretical tensions in explaining the impact's recency and magnitude.[25][1][2][26][27][28][29][30][31] Siraj showed that the Oort Cloud could have been formed as observed from ejected planetesimals from other stars in the Sun's birth cluster, indicating the possible former existence of a solar binary companion.[32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39] Siraj theorized a new method for detecting small black holes.[40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47][48] Siraj proposed searches for trapped interstellar objects in the Solar System,[49][50][51] stellar occultations caused by interstellar objects,[52] optical signatures of interstellar meteors in the Earth's atmosphere,[53][54] and electromagnetic radiation from collisions between interstellar objects and the Moon,[55][56][57] as well as impacts on neutron stars.[58] Siraj published constraints on the morphology of interstellar objects Oumuamua and Borisov,[59][60][61] reported the first discovery of a meteor that originated outside the Solar System,[62][63][64][65][66][67][68] and developed a method for determining the characteristic ejection speeds of interstellar objects from their parent planetary systems.[69][70]
