Early Life and Education:[edit]

Amit Chandpuri’s family hails from Himachal Pradesh and settled in Mohali, Punjab. For school education, he studied at the Air Force School 12 Wing, and then at the Kendriya Vidyalaya, 3BRD, Chandigarh. From his school days, Amit was a creative person, known for his mimicry, and extempore stage presentations – be it acting, singing or dancing. He also led his school cricket even played Cricket at the State level. Amit was also an active, agile athlete who participated in the national school games and even won a medal. While appearing for his counselling session for medical college admissions, after qualifying the Pre- medical test after class twelfth, he found his calling towards theatre and despite family resistance, he opted out of medical stream. Instead he joined the SD College, Chandigarh for the Bachelors in Science Program but soon after went on to obtain a Diploma in Acting from Actor Prepares, under the guidance of Anupam Kher. Here he was adjudged as the best actor among his peers. Thereafter, he tried his luck in Mumbai for a few months to work in the film industry but could not accept the roles offered to him so returned back home. While he continued to act and direct many theatrical productions and short films, he joined Punjab University to complete his graduation. Here, he caught the attention of Dr Rani Balbir Kaur, Chairperson, Department of Indian Theatre, Punjab University and recipient of the National Sangeet Natak Academy Award, who mentored him and went on to direct many theatrical productions with Amit Chandpuri in the lead role. Her words, “When Naseeruddin comes even for a moment, he’ll steal the show” always inspired Amit to be malleable and neutral as an actor and allow the Director to experiment with him. During his education, his prime focus was always on honing his linguistic skills. He is proficient in Hindi and English languages. He has written screenplays and performed theatre in both the languages. Besides, he can speak Punjabi, Himachali, Haryanvi and is quick to pick up various dialects of Hindi and other languages. To hone his skills,Chandpuri attended online film-making courses from Tuft University and Columbia University, USA. Later, he also pursued MBA in HR and Marketing from Punjab University.

Personal Life[edit]

Amit Chandpuri is a self-made enterprising man, keen to pursue his passions while contributing to society. He learnt to dance and play music, honing his skills to a professional level. He learnt contemporary dance forms like Salsa, robotics, Chachacha, and Bollywood along with his native Bhangra style and made it to the top contestants of Season1, Dance India Dance in the year 2009. He also learnt Harmonium and Guitar to give musical notes to his self-composed songs and sang quite a few of them. Amit Chandpuri set up an NGO, ‘Samaj Sanrakshan Samiti’ (Protect the Society) in 2014, a non-profit platform for creating awareness for social causes through the medium of theatre and films. He has led campaigns on arresting food wastage, conserving ecological resources, Educate the girl child, segregating household waste, and skill development among the youth. Over the years Samaj Sanrakshan Society has gained acclaim and credibility in the region. On 15 th Aug 2021, the organization and its lead volunteer were honoured at the State Function by the Government of Punjab. During the pandemic season, Samaj Sanrakshan Samiti set up the Bigshot Academy under the campaign ‘Paddega India tabhi toh baddhega India’ and conducted free educational classes for the under-privileged and needy children. In 2016, he set up ‘Bigshot Productions’, a complete film production House, and since then has produced many short films. ‘Romeo Ke Funday Laajawaab’ is the first Hindi feature film produced by him.

Amit Chandpuri has not only directed several excellent plays but also has contributed an equal number of outstanding performances as an Actor. He has also written/compiled most of the plays himself. Asif Ali Haider, Vikas Mohla, Anupam Kher, Dr Rani Balbir have been his mentors.
