Amit Munjal is an Indian American businessman.[1][2] In 2015, he left his job as CFO & Head of Investments at Citi Holdings to found BrahmaX Ventures, a Bi-Continental Venture Capital Company and to found Doctor Insta, a virtual healthcare company[3] that aims to provide on-demand, remote medical care from doctors to patients via mobile devices, the internet, video and phone.[4][5][6]
Early life and education[edit]
Born in Hisar, Haryana, Munjal graduated from Kurukshetra University with bachelors and master's degrees in Business & Finance. In 1999, he moved to the United States and joined Kelley School of Business, Indiana University Bloomington to pursue MBA in Finance.[7] Munjal attended the Advanced Managment Program at Harvard Business School in 2005,[8] and CFA Charter in 2006 from CFA Institute, Charlottesville, VA.[9]
Personal life[edit]
Munjal maintains a strong relationship with his family and lives between his homes in Los Angeles and New Delhi.[10] His father is a Lawyer by education and a Landlord by profession while the mother is actively engaged in Social Upliftment work.[11] Munjal is an avid traveler and has been to over 80 countries; When he is not working, he likes to read and do outdoorsy activities like hiking, skiing, farming and scuba-diving as he finds them to be therapeutic from his fast paced life.[12] Munjal's personal role models are: Bill Gates and Mother Teresa[13]
Career[edit]
Munjal started his career as Venture Capital Associate and then joined Randstad Holdings as Manager of Corporate Development in 2003 where he worked at Mergers & Acquisitions across US, Europe & Asia. During 2005 to 2006, he worked in Management Consulting with Deloitte Consulting.[14] During 2006 and 2014, Amit Munjal served different roles at Bank of America Merrill Lynch. During his time at Citi Holdings, he worked on several investments and divestment projects.[15] In 2015, he founded a Venture Capital Firm, BrahmaX Ventures, and raised over $50 Million to provide seed to early stage capital to Start-Ups. He also established a health technology company, Doctor Insta, to provide virtual health services in developing countries similar to Teladoc in the US.[16][17][18] The company received $500,000 in seed capital from BrahmaX Ventures and HNIs, $6.5 million in Series A round from RoundGlass Partners and BrahmaX Ventures in 2016.[19][20]
He is a strong advocate of making Healthcare accessible to everyone especially in Developing Countries where Millions of lives are lost or shortened for want of primary healthcare services.[21][22] He got this idea from a small accident that he had while vacationing at Hawaii where he personally used a similar service (As on that remote island, there were no Doctors available in close Vicinity) and realized the power of Virtual Healthcare.[23] To solve this problem, He started the Rural Virtual Healthcare Delivery thru Smartphones to Villagers who otherwise don't have access to quality Doctors in close vicinity[24] and launched "Buy One, Give One" Health Consult campaign whereby for every consult purchased on Doctor Insta Platform, One consult will be offered free of cost to the underprivileged segment of society who couldn't have afforded a Doctor's Consult.[25] Over 3 Million People use the services of Doctor Insta across corporate and retail business streams.[26] His Company, Doctor Insta, became the first company to aggregate all major Online & Offline Pharmacies on one Platform and in turn offer Customers high discounts on medicines.[27] Amit Munjal has been fairly successful in filling the healthcare gap in India which has one of the worst Doctor to Patient Ratios as Most Doctors don't want to live in remote locations or Villages.[28]
Munjal regularly authors Op-eds and articles[29] for different publications on Entrepreneurship, Increasing Productivity of Companies and Countries and on Improving Healthcare using Technology[30] [31][32][33][34][35][36] and is a Frequent Speaker on management, entrepreneurship, and Health-Tech on News Channels- Bloomberg Television, CNBC, NDTV, ET Now as well as at different Business Schools- Kelley School of Business, Harvard, UCLA, Georgia Tech and Management Development Institute and at different conferences and Microsoft Healthcare Summits.[37][38][39][40]
Board memberships and honors[edit]
Munjal is the chairman of the Boards of Doctor Insta and BrahmaX Ventures.[41] He is a Charter Member of The IndUS Entrepreneurs TiE and Los Angeles Chapter of CFA Institute.[42] Munjal also received “Knight of the Blind Award” from the Lions club for his "Each One- Teach One, Plant One and Donate One" Campaign.[43]
