Amitava Chaudhuri, PhD, international trade expert, has been adviser to governments, Ministers and Prime Minsters. He has travelled to 70 countries and has lived for long periods in Africa, the Middle East, Central and South Asia, Europe and the Caribbean. He has worked for the United Nations, the World Bank, the Commonwealth Secretariat and national governments. Trusted by host governments, his work has been commended by the Governments of Mongolia, South Africa, Botswana and the British Virgin Islands.
Dr Chaudhuri’s has recently published a book of travel short stories.
Early life & Education[edit]
Amitava Chaudhuri was born on 29th of November, 1948 in Calcutta (Now Kolkata) just after India’ independence. His mother was a university graduate in the 1930s, and his father, a professor, a PhD from Birmingham University.
Amitava went to the La Martiniere and St Xavier’s Schools of Kolkata, and then graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). After IIT, he did his Masters in Management from the University of Wales in the UK, and eventually, his Doctorate from Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.
An ardent traveler, he traveled to France. Belgium and Greece during his vacations from university in the UK.
Professional Life[edit]
Working for the Indian government he was posted in 1979 to the Indian Embassy to the EU in Brussels to facilitate India-EU trade. He traveled extensively in Europe on work. As his career in international trade grew, it began to take him overseas on missions frequently.
In 1992 he joined the UN as Trade Adviser to Mongolia, and continued in South Africa, Botswana, British Virgin Islands (BVI), South Sudan, Jordan, Iraq, Rwanda, Bangladesh and Ethiopia, advising governments on trade and industrial development. Currently he advises online.
While in the Virgin Islands (UK) from 2006-09, Amitava wrote in the BVI Beacon, Caribbean Net News on sustainable development of the islands and the use of alternative energy in the Caribbean.
In Africa, he worked out trade strategies and strengthened negotiating positions of the African hosts. His opinions were carried in The Africa Report (Oct 2006). The African press and the Hindustan Times of India carried Dr Chaudhuri’s views on the 3rd Africa - India Forum.[1]: India-Africa summit must have a sharp economic focus - Malawi Nyasa Times.[2]
At the time of high level visits in July 2016 of the President and the Prime Minister of India to several African nations, Dr Chaudhuri wrote in the Asian Age in New Delhi that India must connect with Africa thoughtfully and sensitively, since Africa was changing rapidly.[3]
On a lighter vein Dr Chaudhuri wrote about the island of Zanzibar: ‘Zanzibar: a love story’ in the Brunch magazine of the Hindustan Times, New Delhi.[4]

He has also written a book of travel short stories – ‘Ajay and His Tales from Faraway Lands’ which is available on Amazon[5] and Google Play.
