Amiya Dev
Amiya Dev is a scholar, writer and a Bengali critic.
Early life and education
He was one of the very few students who took admission in the first batch of M.A. course in the Department of Comparative Literature at Jadavpur University along with Nabaneeta Devsen, Manabendra Bandopadhyay.
Career
In his article 'Comparative Literature in India' Amiya Dev has stated that in a multilingual country like India a diversity of language and literature is noticed.[1] So there is rare possibility of any existence of a single language and literature here. And if we use the term Indian literature in the plural sense, it denies internal relation and kinship of languages. He has discussed unity and diversity among Indian languages and literatures. Keeping Comparative Indian literature in the background, he has looked for interrelation of similarities and dissimilarities in the Indian literary sphere. After observing the scholarly position of unity and diversity, he could not accept the Post-Structuralist tendency of homogenization of diversity in the name of unity. He has legitimised unity through diversity and has manifested the possible pattern of togetherness. He has tried to find out interliterariness of Indian literature through its unity and diversity. He has not seen Indian literature as a general or particular entity, rather he has considered it as an ongoing process, which changes along with time.
He was the editor of Jadavpur Journal of Comparative Literature for about one and a half decade and was nominated Secretary-General of the Comparative Literature Association of India. Amiya Dev is also the biographer of Sudhindranath Dutta. He was the Vice-President of the International Comparative Literature Association. In the 1990s he served as the Vice-Chancellor of Vidyasagor University and now is a retired person, residing in Calcutta. He continues his career as a scholar and as a writer.
