Amperex Technology
Introduction
Amperex Technology Limited (ATL) is a maker of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries founded in 1999. ATL mainly produces pouch types of lithium polymer batteries for use in devices like smartphones, laptop PCs and drones.
History
ATL started producing batteries for portable DVD players in 2002, and then batteries for US-branded MP3 players in 2003, and began producing batteries for US smartphone brands from 2007. ATL became the largest supplier of lithium polymer batteries from 2012.
Smartphone Battery Supplier
ATL is now the leading smartphone battery vendor with 42 percent revenue share in 2020 and 2021. ATL has produced batteries for Apple's iPhones for a long time.
Technology
ATL began to produce the "L shape" battery for iPhones using a stacking method instead of winding a "jellyroll", which typically produced the "I shape" battery for IT devices. Compared to the "I shape" battery, the "L shape" battery shows larger capacity to fit into the shape of the smartphone's design. The stacking method is widely used to produce EV batteries, but IT devices used the jelly roll type batteries because of easy mass production.
Partnerships
TDK owns 100% of ATL's shares while ATL's business sites and key executives are all based in mainland China. Contemporary Amperex Technology Ltd. (CATL) was originally founded as a spinoff of ATL's EV battery business by Robin Zeng in 2011. Zeng appointed Huang Shilin as head of the spinoff. CATL is now the largest maker of mid- to large-sized batteries for electric vehicles. CATL's headquarters, research institutes and production facilities are also located in Ningde. In 2022, TDK announced a definitive agreement on an establishment of two joint ventures between ATL and CATL, in which one is for the manufacture of rechargeable battery cells and the other is for rechargeable battery packs.
