Amtrak 281 is a preserved EMD F40PHR diesel electric locomotive built by Electro Motive Division (EMD). It was originally built for Amtrak. As of 2023, 281 is used in excursion service on the museum grounds.
History
In 1975, Amtrak placed an order of new locomotives that would replace the unreliable SDP40F’s. They were delivered and began entering service in April the following year. By 1990, Amtrak had planned to replace all of their F40PH units with new P42DC “Genesis” units.
Preservation
When 281 was retired from service, the California State Railway Museum decided to purchase the 281 and put it on display. In late 2020, the CSRM decided to restore it for use on excursions. The rebuild was complete one year later and now pulls tourist trains around the property.
