Amtrak Heritage Units
As part of Amtrak's 40th anniversary, Amtrak's Beech Grove Shops painted 6 units into former paint schemes. These units were 4 P42DC's, one P40DC, and one F40PH, converted into a NPCU.
Making[edit]
In 2011, Amtrak celebrated its 40th anniversary. One year earlier, Amtrak was planning to paint current locomotives into a former paint scheme. The paint schemes, often referred to as "Phases", were going to be made into a locomotive. There has only been one of these locomotives, and it was Amtrak P42DC 66. When the locomotive was in an accident, Beech Grove decided to rebuild it into the phase 2 livery. The other units were then built later.
The units were simply made, from models.[1] The job was simple, paint a model of the P42DC into the scheme, then adapt it to the locomotive. The first 2 made were P42DC Amtrak 156, phase 1 unit, which added the anniversary years around the logo, an Amtrak logo in the front, and other additions. The phase 2 unit, P42DC 66, adapted the anniversary years, a logo move, and other changes. After an accident in February 2016, the locomotive was retired after sustaining significant frame damage, and was mainly used for parts. Replacing this unit was Amtrak P42DC 130, painted in the same scheme. Later on, P42DC 145, the phase 3 unit and P42DC 184, the Phase 4 unit, were painted in their respective schemes.
