Anacortes Today
Anacortes Today is a photographic journal website that documents community life, residents, and events in Anacortes, Washington. The website features photography by Steve Berentson, a fourth-generation Skagit County native.[1]
History
Anacortes Today was launched in 2003 by photographer Steve Berentson at the prompting of How It Works founder Chris Terrell.[2] The website was created during a time when internet usage was not yet universally widespread.[2]
Mission and content
Anacortes Today is designed as a casual journal rather than a traditional news source, focusing on spotlighting community residents and events in Anacortes and surrounding areas.[1][3] The website features photography of local people, community events, and the natural environment of Fidalgo Island, including its beaches, lakes, forestland, and views of the Skagit Valley and San Juan Islands.[1]
Content sections include regular features titled "In the News," "Looking Back," and a comprehensive photo gallery.[1] The website documents various aspects of Anacortes community life, from holiday celebrations and parades to local businesses, maritime activities, and natural landscapes.[3]
Creator
Steve Berentson is a fourth-generation Skagit County native who left Anacortes in 1960 and returned in 1980.[1] His photography work has also been featured in Anacortes Magazine.[2] Berentson offers his photographs for purchase as archival prints and licenses them for online use.[1]
