Dr. Anderson Manoel Herculano Oliveira da Silva

Dr. Anderson Manoel Herculano Oliveira da Silva (November, 25, 1977 - Present) is a Brazilian neurochemist, President of the Brazilian Society for Neuroscience and Behavior (2017-2020)..[1] and publishing pioneering works related to Anxiety using the Zebrafish as a model[2], and to propose Glutathione as a Gliotransmitter in the brain[3].

In addition to his scientific discoveries, Dr. Herculano is highly recognised for his contributions to the formation of new scientists in Amazon region. Throughout his academic path, he mentored several students, which later became Professors and Researchers at the Federal University of Pará.

Academic career[edit]

Dr. Anderson Herculano has obtained his Bachelor degree in Biology from the Federal University of Pará, where he initially worked within the field of Genetics at the lab of Dr. Paula Schneider, later moving to the Physiology Department to work with Neurochemistry under the guidance of Dr. José Luiz Martins do Nascimento, where he earned both his Masters and Doctoral degree[4]

His initial works focused on the actions of Methylmercury (MeHg) in the Central Nervous System and in the development of the Retina, which was the major focus of Dr. Do Nascimento's lab by that time due to the high levels of MeHg in Amazon region. By using the Chicken retina as a model, Herculano described the participation of Nitric oxide in the toxic effects of MeHg in cultured retinal cells[5]

During his Masters studies, he mentored the now Dr. Karen Oliveira and participated in the discovery of the sodium-independent Excitatory amino acid reuptake system in the developing retina, mediated by the Cystine/glutamate transporter.[6]. This initial work led to his insight on the role of Glutathione (GSH) as a signaling molecule within the nervous tissue and later resulted in the discovery of GSH as a gliotransmitter, i.e a molecule released by Glial Cells with signaling properties[3]

After leaving Dr. Do Nascimento's lab and starting his own research lines, Dr. Herculano started to investigate the neurochemical basis of Anxiety, using Zebrafish as a model due to the high homology of this animal with humans in what concerns the anxiety-like behavior. His investigations on anxiety focused mainly in the participation of Oxidative stress in the etiology of anxiety disorders[2][7][8].

In 2016, Dr. Herculano was admitted to the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, being one of the few scientists from Brazilian North Region to get accepted to this club.[4]. In 2017, he became president of the Brazilian Society for Neuroscience and Behavior, the greatest Neuroscience society in Latin America[1]

In addition to his scientific discoveries, Dr. Herculano is highly recognised for his contributions to the formation of new scientists in Amazon region. Throughout his academic path, he mentored several students, which later became Professors and Researchers at the Federal University of Pará.
