Andre Soares (born Kevin André Dos Santos Soares, September 6, 1990) is a Brazilian-American author, screenwriter and actor. He is mostly known for the Vice Versa trilogy, a collection of three science-fiction novellas exploring various themes including Artificial Intelligence, Religion, Interpersonal Relationships, Love, Mental Health and Time Travel.
In the process of releasing his fourth project, codename AIAZ, Soares has also gathered a few acting credits in indie films in Los Angeles, Arizona and Atlanta.
Early life and education
Andre Soares was born on September 6, 1990 in Rio de Janeiro to a Brazilian tour guide and diplomatic agent, Aldo Lino Dos Santos Soares, and a French national, Isabelle Joly.
After his father left, Andre's mother relocated to Baixada Fluminense, a crime-ridden area.[1][2] north of Rio de Janeiro.
In 1992, Soares left Brazil with his mother. They first settled in Paris, France and shortly after, relocated to northern metro, in an area known as "Zone 4", Garges-Lès-Gonesse, a high poverty and crime pocket[3][2] 9 miles from Paris.
There, he pursued his education at Victor Hugo Elementary, Paul Éluard Middle School and Lycée Simone De Beauvoir Highschool.
In 2009, after passing the Baccalauréat as a free agent, Soares left France to pursue his creative dreams in New York City.[4][2]
He graduated from Park University in 2018, majoring in Business Administration and minoring in Creative Writing.
Soares also studied film acting with Bill Howey's independent class, in Mesa, AZ and the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta, GA.[2]
Career
2000-2013
After a brief exploration of stage play, Andre Soares went through a period of creative experimentation, finding interest in Beatboxing, Songwriting, Beatmaking (under the moniker Inv)[5], and Hip Hop dance.
2018-2021
After leaving the U.S. Army in 2018 and graduating the same year with an associate in Business Administration and Creative Writing, Andre Soares began studying film acting with Bill Howey, a former LA acting coach (and father of actor Steve Howey) who relocated to Arizona. He integrated a Phoenix-based troupe named Showstoppers Interactive Entertainment[6] the same year[4], as a full-time stage performer and background dancer.
In 2019, Soares participated in a few local Arizonan productions, including Ghost Duster, Under an English Sky and Exposure, from American director Colten Dietz.
March 2020, and the emergence of the COVID19 disease marked a difficult period for troupes and production houses. New regulatory procedures and bans of mass gatherings led to a temporary shutdown of Showstoppers' operations. Soares refocused on creative writing, pivoting towards his current platform.[2]
He published his first novella in January 2021, The Forerunner (Part 1 of the Vice Versa Series), under his own publishing imprint and production company, Process Protocol LLC (legally based in Georgia as of June 27, 2022). He continued developing the Vice Versa trilogy under the mentorship of science-fiction author K.S. Ferguson[4][2], and subsequently released C1, and Alidala, the conclusion to a series two years in the making.
The Vice Versa trilogy received overall positive reviews on Amazon US and Goodreads, being described as "An absolutely unique Sci-Fi story with vibrantly pictured scenes that placed you in the room amongst the characters.", a "storyline[...]magnificently and carefully written" and a "masterclass in storytelling."
In 2021, Andre Soares collaborated with Tammy Smith Casting (Atlanta, GA) and landed a script consultancy position on a AAA tentpole set to release in Q4 2022 (a strict NDA prevents the release of further specifics).
2022-Present day
Following a few press releases and appearances on social media podcasts, Andre Soares announced a new project, codename AIAZ (according to an official website's communique), a political satire with an espionage element. The project, a full-length standalone novel, is set for a 2023 release[2][7]. No further information has been provided at the time of this writing.
Andre Soares is also developing a limited TV series[2] titled Angra Mainyu. Very few details on the project have been shared. His official website mentions a "high concept spiritual heist"[8]
Personal life and legal issues
Andre Soares grew up in areas officially classified as slums and ghettos.[2] Raised by a single mother with very few connections to direct relatives, he lived a harsh childhood, consistently experiencing hunger, poverty and barriers to entry. His mother, a former retail saleswoman, dental assistant now clinical psychologist struggled to make ends meet yet offset the destructive effects of his environment by supporting his education, exploration of art, sports (with a brief shot at a semi-pro soccer contract in Paris in 2003) and foreign cultures. In many instances, he referred to his mother's acquired taste for "reading, painting and creative writing"[9] as a variable that shaped his pathway.[2]
Growing up in a multi-cultural household[4][2], his storytelling was shaped by a diverse entourage composed of Jamaicans, West Africans (Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast and Benin), Central Africans (DRC), West indies locals, Brazilian and French peers.
At his arrival in New York City in 2009, Andre Soares had no legal documentation besides a tourist visa and a few hundred dollars. Finding the support of an episcopal church and its rector, Niegel Massey[10], he was able to secure housing and a job in a two-week span.
In 2013, Andre Soares married Mississippi native Alexis Sharice Dos Santos (formerly Theodore), with whom he had two children, Elijah (2014) and Isaiah (2016).
He joined the U.S. Army in 2014, as a cannon crewmember under the 1st Armored Division in Fort Bliss, Texas.
Andre Soares left the service in January 2018 as a Sergeant on a honorable discharge[4].
According to a February, 2019 obituary, Andre Soares lost his wife and the mother of his two children, decorated U.S. Army service member Alexis Sharice Dos Santos.
Activism and social mission
Andre Soares is a vocal supporter of mental health, social justice, feminism and racial equality, recurring themes found in his works.
He participated in a humanitarian operation in 2004, at the age of 14. The mission, sponsored by French NGO Sports sans frontières (SFF), focused on the development of recreational infrastructures in Casablanca and the distribution of more than 4000 euros worth of school supplies to Moroccan children living under the poverty threshold. The operation was a transformative experience for Andre, who shared his thoughts in a 52-minute documentary released in his local movie theater[11].
He has since voiced his support for gender equality, police reform, economic advancement in impoverished areas and racial equality through the promotion of an inclusive representation in his art, being "an advocate for writers of diverse backgrounds"[12] and the support of organizations such as Goodwill, iFundWomen, Black Girl Ventures and the NAACP.
Through interviews on social media[13] and local magazines, Soares shared his belief in a quiet activism and proved vocal against what he identifies as race hustlers, reactionary movements and virtue signaling.
On March 23, 2022, he expressed the desire to "eventually support a better and more diverse representation in Art, through grants, workshops, lectures and donations[...]"[4] in an interview with Shoutout Atlanta.
