Andrea Luka Zimmerman (born 1969) is a German born British filmmaker, artist and cultural activist based in London, best known for her socially engaged artworks, in particular a reframing of working class experience [1] through her artist's films and documentaries Erase and Forget (2017).[2][3], Estate, A Reverie (2015)[4] [5][6] and Taskafa, Stories of the Street (2013)[7][8]. Also known as a founding member of Vision Machine (collaborators on Academy Award® nominated feature documentary The Look of Silence).

Life and Career

Andrea Luka Zimmerman grew up on a large council estate in Germany, left school at 16 and after moving to London in 1991 studied at Central St. Martins for a PhD.

Andrea Zimmerman's films include Erase and Forget (2017, 88mins) a documentary portrait of 'Bo' Gritz, which presents a 'study of the multiple expressions of Gritz’s life against the backdrop of post-Vietnam America, gun culture, and the nascent alt-right'[12] . Erase and Forget premiered at the 2017 Berlin Film Festival [13] and in the UK at the London Film festival. Estate, a Reverie (2015, 83mins) tracks the passing of the Haggerston Estate in East London and the utopian promise of social housing it once offered, with a celebration of everyday humanity. Taskafa, Stories of the Street (2013, 66mins) explores resistance and co-existence through the lives of the street dogs of Istanbul and is voiced by John Berger. [14][15]

Art exhibitions and projects include i am here, a public artwork in Hackney, which was made in response to the experience of living in an estate which was being gentrified. For this, large photos of residents from the estate were placed over the windows of vacated flats, with the intention of opening up a 'reflective space concerning issues about visibility and 'urban regeneration'.' Civil Rites was made in response to a speech given by Martin Luther King at Newcastle University, and was shown at London Open, Whitechapel Gallery, London, (2018) and Tyneside Cinema Gallery, Newcastle, UK, (2017/18). Common Ground, Spike Island, Bristol (2017) comprised an exhibition, screening, talks and discussions around strategies of social and cultural resistance and ways of living together. Real Estates (co-curated with David Roberts), PEER with LUX, London (2015) was similarly a multifaceted project around issues of housing and space in East London.
