Andres Gach Gatluak Wechkuoth, also known as Wechkuoth II (born November 02, 1996), is a South Sudanese human rights activist. He is a Democrat from the Federal Democratic Party (FDP).

Hails from Eastern Jikany Nuer, in Nasir County of South Sudan.

Career and education[edit]

From 2019 to 2021, Gatluak served as the President of the South Sudan Students Union in Ethiopia (SSSUE), while pursuing his Bachelor of Arts in Global Studies and International Relations at New Generation University, Addis Ababa where to improve the educational environment and advocates for the rights of South Sudanese students, it has been an active political story as Andres was not democratically elected, but by the executive when the elected president, Nyuon Buony Chagey was impeached due to corruption with the Union fund, some of the sources within the student's body and Union's few Executive board members regarded that it was a coup against the elected President plotted by Andres by then. Gatluak was appointed as the Commissioner to South Sudan for the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC)[1] [2]in Zurich, Switzerland, from 2021 to 2023. In this role, he was actively involved in promoting and protecting human rights, collaborating with international institutions and monitoring bodies along with human rights bodies in South Sudan.

Gatluak has held the position of Director for International and Diplomatic Affairs at the African Union of Youth Assembly-Ethiopia (AUYA-Ethiopia),[3] since August 1, 2023.[4] In this capacity, he focuses on fostering youth empowerment, diplomatic collaboration, and sustainable development across Ethiopia and Africa, currently promoted in the same organization as its Vice President.

Political and military career[edit]

In addition to his work in activism and diplomacy, Gatluak has gained political and military experience. He was involved with the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army in opposition (SPLM IO) rebel army from 2013 as a White Army member to 2015 as the Army wing member of the party.

He served as the Secretary General for the Youth League of the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA)/Federal Democratic Party (FDP), Ethiopia Chapter, from 2018 to 2020. He is also known as a democratization political aspirant and political analyst.

Andres has collaborated with local and international organizations to address the root causes of conflict and promote long-term stability in South Sudan as the delegation team member to 2018's Addis Ababa Revitalized Agreement for the Conflict Resolution on South Sudan (R ARCSS). He actively participated in peace negotiations and dialogue forums, advocating for inclusive decision-making processes that prioritize the needs and aspirations of all South Sudanese citizens. Gatluak's commitment and unwavering efforts have garnered recognition both nationally and internationally. He has been honored with several awards for his outstanding contributions to humanitarian and peace-building efforts.

Furthermore, Gatluak continues to inspire and empower young individuals in South Sudan by serving as a mentor and role model. He firmly believes in the potential of the younger generation to bring about positive change and actively supports youth-led initiatives and organizations.
