Andrew Calder (born March 20, 1964 ) is a Canadian-born artist, creative entrepreneur, character actor, photographer, filmmaker and storyteller.

Early life

Andrew Calder was born on March 20, 1964, in Montreal, Quebec, to Guendolyn Calder (née Tolson) and Robert Lewis Calder. He is the middle child of three siblings, with an older sister and a younger brother. In addition to a house in the Eastern Townships, the family had a farmhouse in the Southern Nova Scotia's rural village of Chester, Nova Scotia, where they spent their summers.

Education

In 1987, Calder moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts and entered Harvard University, earning a Bachelor of Liberal Arts Degree in 1990. There, he was taught by intellectual historian, Donald Fleming, paleontologist, evolutionary biologist, Stephen Jay Gould, philosopher, Robert Nozick, theologian, Harvey Cox, law professor, Alan Dershowitz and political scientist, Stanley Hoffman.

As well Calder studied acting under British-born American stage actor, Jeremy Geidt at the American Repertory Theater, film at Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and painting at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

He also studied at, USC Film School and Howard Fine Studio.

Career

Creative Entrepreneur

Calder began his career in the 1980s as a, painter, then later, builder, of architecturally designed pre-fabricated homes, in the Eastern Townships. Andrew Calder is Co-Founder of Black Wolf Country.

Film & Television

Calder guest starred in Warner Brothers, ER created by Michael Crichton, and played the lead role in, "Kelp" which won the Grand Jury Prize at the Philadelphia Film Festival and premiered at SXSW. Calder played the role of a Depression-era train-riding hobo in season 5's, Red Shoe Diaries directed by Zalman King.

He acted in Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros, Desert Song long form narrative video; He was the inspiration and voice actor for a character in Alberto Mielgo's Academy Award winning animated short film, "The Windshield Wiper."

Calder, produced, wrote and directed the documentary, A Walk in the Sky, on the historic residential architecture of Lake Tahoe and Northern California, feature the work of AIA Gold Medal winners, Bernard Maybeck, Frank Lloyd Wright, Joseph Esherick, Julia Morgan and William Wurster.

Calder projects in development include: a television series chronicling an alternative high school in Los Angeles; "The Lowest Depths," a character-driven drama inspired by his experiences in, Cambridge, MA.

Music Industry

Calder has collaborated extensively with internationally recognized artists, including a two year long storytelling partnership with Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice. He has worked with musicians, Glen Hansard, Lissie, Red Hot Chili Peppers, among others.

Branding and Marketing

Andrew Calder’s branding and product development, including conceptual work for Anheuser-Busch’s, "Doc Otis Hard Lemon Malt Beverage", copywriting & marketing for fabricator Jonathan Ward’s ICON Off-Road Brand; inspiring Icon Derelict DeSoto and creating Black Wolf Gum, an artisanal energy product.

Personal Life

Calder is married to Melissa Mortensen, sister of the late, influential music and hip-hop photographer and photojournalist, Shawn Mortensen.

Nova Scotian merchant, shipbuilder, and politician, The Honorable Ezra A. Churchill is Calder's, third great-grandfather. As a boy of only three or four years old, young Ezra lost his father, Ezra Churchill, who served as crew aboard the Yarmouth merchant Brigantine, Hibernia. The elder Churchill was lost at sea during a storm off Mud Island in 1806, while the vessel was returning from a voyage to New York City.

Calder is a skier, sailor and race car driver, twice participating in the Baja 1000 Mexican off-road motorsport race.
