Andrew Harrison (Saxophonist)
Dr. Andrew Harrison (b. 1987) is an Indian-American classical saxophonist and educator.
Education
Dr. Harrison started his higher education at La Sierra University in Riverside California in 2005. Upon entering, his major was biochemistry premed and he was working to become an ophthalmologist. After spending his first summer at the Ameropa Music Festival in the Czech Republic, he changed course and switched his major to music with an emphasis in saxophone performance. In January 2007, Dr. Harrison transferred to the University of Texas at Austin to study with renowned classical saxophonist Harvey Pittel. He completed a Bachelor's and Master's in Saxophone Performance, and was the applied saxophone teaching assistant during his Master's degree. After completing his master's in 2012, Dr. Harrison began his Doctorate of Musical Arts at the USC Thornton School of Music, where he studied with Los Angeles Philharmonic Saxophonists James Rotter and Douglas Masek. He finished his DMA in 2015.
Career
During his DMA and after, Dr. Harrison was teaching at the Colburn School in Los Angeles along with the French Conservatory of Music in Beverly Hills. He began his performance career playing at numerous venues in Los Angeles, ranging from dive bars, libraries, and churches. He quickly developed a name for himself in the LA scene, and was soon performing with organizations like the Burbank Philharmonic, Downey Symphony, Music Academy of the West, the Pacific Symphony, and more. Currently Dr. Harrison performs all over the country as a recitalist, clinician, and concerto soloist. He is currently on faculty at Mt. San Antonio College, Cerritos College, and Sonoma State University. He has commissioned over 30 works for saxophone by composers such as Joel Love, Jules Pegram, Viet Cuong, to name a few, and has placed in numerous competitions, including the US "Pershing's Own" Collegiate Concerto Competition, the LMC Frances Walton Competition, numerous MTNA Competitions, and the American Prize in Music. He is currently an Eastman Winds Endorsing Artist, and exclusively plays on their saxophones. He has had positive critical reviews from multiple publications including the Austin Statesman, LA Opus Magazine, The Instrumentalist Magazine, and the Beverly Hills National Auditions, where he was described as "a magician showing off his tricks," a "spectacular performer," and has a sound that is "broad and rich."
