Andrew Hopkins
Education[edit]
Hopkins grew up in Neath, South Wales. His first summer job was in the labs at British Steel plant in nearby Port Talbot. He attended the University of Manchester with a scholarship from British Steel in 1993, where he later graduated with a First-Class Honours in Chemistry. He developed an interest in computational chemistry and its pharmaceutical applications throughout his academic years at Manchester University. After a year at British Steel, Hopkins undertook a Doctorate in Molecular Biophysics at the University of Oxford, joining Dave Stuart’s FRS Lab to investigate the crystal structures of HIV reverse transcriptase.
Career[edit]
From the University of Oxford, Hopkins joined Pfizer in 1998. At Pfizer, he established new functions such as the Target Analysis Group and collaborated with Chris Lipinski. He worked on building data models to predict protein target effects and drug efficacy and safety. In 2007, Hopkins left Pfizer to join the University of Dundee, where he became the Director of SULSA in 2011. He is also the chair of medicinal informatics at the University of Dundee and has raised £50 million for academic and commercial research activities.
In 2012, Hopkins started Exscientia, a pharmatech company that applies artificial intelligence (AI) technology to drug discovery. Exscientia has partnerships with well-known companies, including GSK, Roche, and Sanofi. He is also the Founder and Managing Director at Kinetic Discovery Ltd.
Research & Project[edit]
Hopkins' research focuses on developing new informatics and experimental methods for drug discovery. His lab specializes in chemoinformatics, chemogenomics, and structural bioinformatics. He has authored some of the most highly cited papers in modern drug discovery and has over 50 scientific publications and patents. Notable projects include 'Learning How to Design Drugs' and 'Stabilising G-Protein Coupled Receptors in Solution with Cholesterol-Based Detergents for Drug Discovery Purposes'.
