Andrew John Watson (born 4 November 1959) is a Canadian reproductive biologist. His research focus is on defining the mechanisms that control mammalian preimplantation development and in understanding the impact of embryo environments on early development.
Career and research
Watson served as a professor and taught at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry in London, Ontario between the years 1993 to 2022. He also served as an Associate Dean of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs between 2010 and 2018. He remains at University of Western Ontario as Professor Emeritus as of 2026.[1][2].
His research focuses on understanding the earliest stages of mammalian development, which includes the period from fertilization to implantation to the uterus and the beginnings of pregnancy. Watson’s research team investigated the roles of multiple key genes during preimplantation development and explored the effects that embryonic external environment has on gene function and thus early preimplantation development. This research helped demonstrate that the very beginning of mammalian development has a major impact on not only whether pregnancy will occur but also on the health of the fetus, and postpartum life overall. Watson’s research supported the employment of safe and efficient methods in the fertility clinic, assisting couples facing fertility challenges to fulfill their family planning desires[3][4][5][6][7]
