Andrew L. Seidel is an American attorney, activist, and author best known for his work on religious freedom, church-state separation, and christian nationalism. He is the author of two books on American religion, law, and politics: The Founding Myth (2019) and American Crusade (2022).
Activism and Legal Work
Seidel is currently Vice President of Strategic Communications at Americans United for Separation of Church and State.[1][2] He was previously a constitutional attorney and later Director of Strategic Response at the Freedom From Religion Foundation.[1]
January 6th Capitol Attack
Following the January 6th attack, Seidel co-authored a report entitled Christian nationalism and the January 6, 2021 insurrection along with several leading scholars of christian nationalism including Sam Perry and Katherine Stewart.[3] In March 2022, Seidel testified before the January 6th Select Committee about the role of christian nationalism in the lead up and during the January 6th attack.[4]
Media Coverage
In 2013, Seidel appeared on The O'Reilly Factor to debate Bill O'Reilly on the role of religion in American government, namely in relation to the use of the Bible in presidential inaugurations and the inclusion of the words "so help me god" in the presidential oath of office. [5]
Seidel gained further media attention in 2019 when conservative evangelical pastor Greg Locke posted a video of himself burning a copy of Seidel's book The Founding Myth. Seidel had sent the copy to Locke hopping he would read it and that it would spark discussion among the religious communities he sought to critique. Locke said that he received numerous messages telling him that his burning of the book had inspired them to buy copies.[6]
