Andrew Robertson is a Canadian visual artist known for his monochromatic oil paintings, intricate graffiti pieces, and large-scale murals. Born in Calgary, Alberta, he moved to rural Saskatchewan during his childhood and developed a strong connection with the landscapes through photography and videography.[1]
Career[edit]
Robertson began his career as a Youth Care Worker, a position he held for seven years. In 2020, amidst personal challenges, Robertson turned to art as a form of solace. By July 2022, he decided to pursue art full-time. His artistic works have since been recognized and featured across Canada and parts of the United States.
Artistic style[edit]
Robertson captures 'light value' in his black and white pieces and has explored different mediums such as graffiti, using spray paints to create works that emulate the texture and depth of oil paintings. His themes often encompass mental health, individual value, and the essence of the rural Canadian landscape.
Brand collaborations and media appearances[edit]
Throughout his career, Robertson has collaborated with various brands, including the Hunter Brothers for whom he has created 19 custom-painted denim jackets for charity auctions, album artwork photography, and single artwork photography. His contributions also extend to storyboard, video color grading, and editing for the documentary "Into Northern Iraq" for Vision Beyond Borders.[2] His work has been featured on Tourism Saskatchewan and highlighted by SK Arts for his contributions to the local art scene.
Exhibitions[edit]
Robertson has showcased his art in various exhibitions and has participated in mural festivals, including one in Medicine Hat, Alberta. His exhibitions have been featured on SwiftCurrentOnline and his murals have attracted attention in Shaunavon and beyond.
Artistic Performances[edit]
In a striking blend of visual art and performance, Andrew Robertson created a powerful statement on mental health, particularly within the agricultural community of Saskatchewan. He executed a thought-provoking piece where he painted an image of a man in a field holding a candle, only to set the painting on fire. This act was symbolic of the precarious nature of mental health and the ease with which control can slip into chaos if help is not sought. This performance was a commentary on the high rates of suicide among farmers in the area, drawing attention to the struggles of mental health in the agricultural sector. The burning of the painting became a metaphor for the consuming nature of mental health crises and the importance of addressing them before they escalate. Robertson's work in this realm emphasizes his commitment not only to art but also to advocacy and community engagement.[3]
