Andrew Scott Doran is a British-American botanist, horticulturist, and Director of Collections at the University of California Botanical Garden at Berkeley.[1] He is Curator of Cultivated Plants at the University and Jepson Herbaria.[2]
Career
Having held positions in the management of both living[3] and preserved plants, libraries and archives,[4] Doran is a proponent of making collections available on-line and has launched numerous virtual collections including the Charterhouse School Herbarium[5]and John Muir's Herbarium.[6] At the Internet Archive he was responsible for cataloging and transporting the ProQuest LLC microfilm serials collection (formerly University Microfilms) from Ann Arbor to the Physical Archive in Richmond, California and was instrumental in acquiring the Marygrove College Library for digitization[7]. He presents collections digitization projects at national and international conferences.
Doran is an authority on cultivated plants and cultivated plant nomenclature, having worked for the Royal Horticultural Society's Department of Botany for a short time before working for Denver Botanic Gardens where he was employed as a plant taxonomist and was Cultivar Registrar[8] for Nymphaeaceae. At the University of Connecticut Doran described a new intersubgeneric hybrid[9] in the genus Nymphaea. At the University of California, Berkeley Doran currently is Director of Collections[3] of one of the world's most thoroughly documented living collections[10] of plants with over 12,000 taxa including specimens collected by Joseph Rock, Robert Ornduff, and Daniel Hinkley. He teaches classes using natural history collections for research.
