Andrew Stanish (born 2011) is a Canadian youth curler from Winnipeg, Manitoba. He trains at the Heather Curling Club and receives coaching from Olympic gold medalist Jill Officer. Stanish is among a group of young Winnipeg curlers highlighted in media coverage preceding the 2026 Winter Olympics, where youth participation in the sport increased in the region.[1]
Early life
Stanish was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and grew up in the South St. Vital area of the city. He developed an interest in curling at a young age after watching Canadian national competitions such as the Scotties Tournament of Hearts.[1]
He later joined the Heather Curling Club, one of Winnipeg's major curling facilities, where he began regular training and participation in youth curling programs.
Curling career
At the Heather Curling Club, Stanish trains under the guidance of Jill Officer, a member of the Canadian team that won the gold medal in women's curling at the 2014 Winter Olympics.[1]
His training focuses on delivery mechanics, sweeping coordination, and shot-making precision. In interviews discussing youth curling development in Winnipeg, Stanish has stated that he enjoys the technical aspects of the sport, including the details involved in achieving consistent delivery and sweeping technique.[1]
Stanish has cited Canadian curler Matt Dunstone as one of his primary inspirations.
In addition to on-ice training, he has practiced shot selection and curling strategy using online curling simulations such as the browser-based curling game curling.gg.
Education and personal life
Stanish attends Glenlawn Collegiate Institute in Winnipeg. He has been described by classmates as a strong academic student with interests in science and law.
The school has produced several notable alumni including Reid Carruthers, who was world curling champion along with his team in 2011.
