Andrew Waisler
Andy Waisler is an American architectural designer whose work includes production and post-production environments for the entertainment industry.[1][2][3][4][5]
Career
Animation and Visual Effects
In the mid-1990s, Waisler co-founded the computer animation company PropellerHead Design with J. J. Abrams and Rob Letterman. The company produced content for HBO and was later hired by DreamWorks to assist in developing the original technical pipeline for Shrek.[6] The team created an early animation test featuring the voice of Chris Farley in the title role, known as the Shrek – I Feel Good Animation Test.
Waisler worked in visual effects and motion graphics for film and television, with credits including How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000 film), Star Trek: Nemesis (2002), I, Robot (film), (2004), and The Day After Tomorrow (2004).[7] His television work includes the original title sequence for Felicity (TV series).[8]
Architecture
In 1999, Waisler collaborated with architect Neil Denari on The Massey House, a digital design project exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA, in New York as part of The Un-Private House Exhibition.[9]
Notable projects also include the headquarters of Bad Robot in Santa Monica, a 25,000-square-foot light industrial conversion completed in collaboration with Shimoda Design Group.[10][11][12] Waisler’s collaboration with Bad Robot was also referenced by J. J. Abrams, who described him as the architect behind a “creative playground” for the company.[13] Abrams has noted that the design of Bad Robot's offices was intended to foster creativity. Even the waiting areas were furnished with tables covered in paper and markers rather than magazines, with Abrams explaining that "it's not a place to read, it's a place to create."[14]
Other notable projects include an adaptive reuse project in Santa Monica for a “well-known, international animation studio.” The architect of record was Gwynne Pugh Urban Studio, The project has been featured in ArchDaily,[15] World-Architects,[16] and Inhabitat.[17]
