Andrey Paribok (born 1952, Leningrad), is a Soviet and Russian orientalist, a specialist in the languages and philosophical tradition of ancient India. He is one of the authors of the Great Russian Encyclopedia.

He is a participant in international conferences.[1][2]

Biography

For four years he studied at the Physics department of Leningrad University, then graduated (1978) from the Oriental faculty of the same university, being a student of Georgiy Zograf and Vladimir Erman. Until 2000, he worked at the Leningrad branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since 2000 he has been teaching at the Faculty of Philosophy, St. Petersburg State University, and has been an associate professor since 2005. Ph. D. in Philology with thesis The System of the Pāli Verb (2004).[3]

He teaches courses in Ancient Indian Philosophy, Indo-Buddhist Culture and Religion, Philosophy of Language in ancient India, and Philosophy of Buddhism.[4] Since the beginning of 1992, he has tried to comprehend and master Dzogchen in accordance with Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche's lineage.[5].

He translated from Pali, compiled, commented, and provided a preface to a number of important literary monuments of ancient Indian Buddhism:

  • Повести о мудрости истинной и мнимой // Tales of true and imaginary wisdom (together with B. Zakharyin, 1989)[7]
  • Буддийские сказания //Buddhist Tales: The Utpalas. Book 1 (together with Yu. Alikhanova, 1992)[8]
  • Джатаки: Избранные рассказы о прошлых жизнях Будды // Jataka tales: selected stories about the past lives of the Buddha (together with V. Erman, 2003)[9].

Paribok also edited Великие учителя Тибета (The Great Teachers of Tibet, 2003)[10] and a two-volume monograph by Fyodor Shcherbatskoy entitled Теория познания и логика по учению позднейших буддистов (Theory of Knowledge and Logic in the Teaching of Later Buddhists, 1995)[11]
