Andru Pulu (born July 29, 1991) is an American former professional football player who was a defensive tackle in the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for the Washington Huskies and Eastern Washington Eagles. Pulu was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2014.

Early life

Pulu was born in Seattle, WA to parents Logo and Seioliani Pulu and was raised in Federal Way with his younger brother Jordan. Pulu went to Federal Way High School where he played high school football for the Eagles as an offensive lineman and linebacker and led the Eagles to the 4A playoffs for the first time since 1976, winning the league title for the first time in 31 years. Pulu also made it to the state 4A championships in shot put as a junior, finishing 11th.[2] At the beginning of his senior season, Pulu committed to the University of Washington on September 9, 2008 where he would be converted to the defensive line. [3] Pulu graduated in June 2009.

College career

Pulu attended the University of Washington, playing for the Huskies of the Pac-10 Conference.[4] As a true freshman in 2009, he played in 11 games, recording 2 tackles.[5] Pulu was one of just ten freshman to see the field for UW and was expected to compete for a starting position with Daniel Te’o-Nesheim departing to the NFL. After his 2010 arrest, Pulu was suspended indefinitely from the Huskies and spent 2010 without a team. On February 2, 2011, Pulu officially signed his letter of intent to join Eastern Washington University to play with the defending FCS national champion Eagles.[6] After sitting out 2011 while ineligible, Pulu was a starter in 2012 and 2013 for the contending Eagles. Pulu was selected as an honorable mention for the All-Big Sky team in 2012 and 2nd team All-Big Sky in 2013. After successfully resurrecting his football career, many NFL scouts were looking at the undersized defensive lineman and considered him a sleeper who could potentially be drafted in the 7th round or become a priority UDFA for the 2014 draft.

Pulu was signed by the Seattle Seahawks as an undrafted free agent on May 10, 2014,[10] but, after OTAs, was released in June, two weeks after the Seahawks signed veteran defensive tackle Kevin Williams.[11] Pulu signed back with the Seahawks on August 4, 2014 for the preseason[12] where he saw rotational snaps on the offensive line, before again being released following the conclusion of the preseason.[13]

Legal issues

On March 7, 2010, Pulu was involved in an alcohol-induced verbal altercation while attending a party when an onlooking friend from the UW Men’s Soccer team stepped in to break the fight up. According to the court documents, Pulu would punch and stomp the victim in the face for intervening, resulting in a broken nose and fractured cheek. On March 9, 2010, the Huskies would suspend Pulu from the team indefinitely without disclosing a reason.[14] Pulu turned himself into the authorities on March 16, 2010 in relation to the alleged assault[15] and pled not guilty to the charges at an arraignment and was released on $30,000 bail. On May 7, 2010, Pulu was sentenced to six months in prison that could be served in work release.[16]
