Andrzej L. Ruprecht (20 April 1935 – 2 July 2010) was a disabled Polish biologist specializing in osteology and chiropterology. He was particularly interested in mammals that lived in Poland during the Pleistocene. He was a long-time scientist at the Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Białowieża and fought for the rights of disabled scientists in Poland.[1]

Biography[edit]

Ruprecht was born in Gdańsk and spent his childhood in Nowy Sącz. After the end of World War II, his family returned to Gdańsk, where he began his studies at the local medical academy. After being diagnosed with polio, Ruprecht became wheelchair-bound and decided to discontinue his education at the medical academy. In 1957, he changed his field of study to biology and earth science and began his studies at the University of Poznań. He moved to the University of Toruń two years later to continue his studies and graduated with a master's degree. The subject of his master's thesis was the diet of a barn owl from the Aleksandrów Kujawski, Ciechocinek, and Raciążek regions.[2] Ruprecht received his doctorate degree in biological sciences in 1973 from the University of Lublin. His dissertation was titled "Craniometric variability of the Central European muskrat population Ondatra zibethicus."[2][3]

Ruprecht joined the Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Białowieża in 1964. During his career, Ruprecht wrote about and discovered 21 species of bats and four rodents.[4] He is widely known as an expert in his field, being cited by peers over 1,400 times.[5] He has also authored several books on mammals, owls, and Polish bison. [6][7][8]

As a polio survivor, Ruprecht navigated the stereotypes associated with being the only disabled and wheelchair-bound scientist at the Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Białowieża. His 26-year career at the Institute was cut short in 1990 because of his illness, but he continued to write and conduct research independently. Ruprecht was awarded the Gold Cross of Merit on May 31, 1989 and the Medal of the 40th Anniversary of People's Poland on July 22, 1984. He also received the Award of the Scientific Secretary of the Polish Academy of Sciences for his co-authorship of "Distribution of mammals in Poland" in 1984.[9] In addition, the Friends Society of Ciechocinek awarded him the Medal of Professor Leonard Lorentowicz on November 10, 1999. He was an honorary member of the Polish Zoological Society and the Polish Society for the Protection of Bats.[2][4]
