Andy Carnegie

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Andy Carnegie is a Scottish activist, food bank owner and campaigner against poverty. With his son Darren, Andy founded "Glasgow's Needy" and is known for starting a pop-up food bank in Glasgow's George Square, which runs every Saturday.[1]

Glasgow's Needy

Andy and his son Darren Carnegie founded the charity "Glasgow's Needy" and both are prominent campaigners against poverty and injustice in Glasgow. The pair became known after initiating a spontaneous pop-up food bank in George Square following loyalist violence after the result of the Scottish independence referendum on September 19th, 2014. Speaking of the spontaneity of the drive, Carnegie commented: “The intention was to speak about peace, about ending bigotry and hatred, and we got on to our food bank.”[2]

After amassing thousands of donations from the general public,[3] the charity decided to operate a food drive in George Square every Saturday which is open to all members of the public. Unlike many other food banks, Glasgow's Needy does not ask those receiving food packages for food vouchers.

Political Activism

Andy has repeatedly attended protests against the G8 at their summits, including the 31st G8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland.[4] He is an outspoken campaigner against social injustice, poverty, racism and homophobia. He claimed that he would "...die a revolutionary."[4]
