Andy Palmer is an American technology entrepreneur and seed investor. He co-founded Vertica, an early provider of column-store data management, that was later sold to Hewlett-Packard.[1]. Currently, he is active in the Boston, Massachusetts start-up eco-system where he has founded or funded more than 40 start up companies[2]. He was recognized by the New England Venture Capital Association as Angel Investor of the Year in 2013.[3]

Early life

Palmer was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan June 17, 1966 and later moved to Barrington, Illinois with his family.

Education

Palmer graduated from Bowdoin College in 1988 with a BA in English, History and a minor in Computer Science[4]. He earned an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth in 1994[5].

Early career

After graduation from Tuck, Palmer joined Trilogy of Austin, Texas, where he became director of marketing. Later he joined pcOrder.com, a spin-off of Trilogy as its VP of sales and marketing. Palmer was a member of the start-up team and the senior vice president of operations and CIO at Infinity Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: INFI). He also held executive positions at Bowstreet (acquired by IBM)[6][7].[not in citation given] [8].[not in citation given]

Vertica

Palmer met computer scientist Michael Stonebraker in 2004. They collaborated on founding Vertica, where Palmer became CEO. Vertica was an early Big Data analytics company with focus on column-store DBMS technology [9] that was founded in 2005 and acquired by Hewlett-Packard in 2011[10]. A number of experts in the database field were involved in Vertica, including: Dr. Jerry Held, former senior vice president at Oracle (chairman of Vertica) and computer scientists Daniel Abadi, David DeWitt, Donald Haderle, Samuel Madden, and Stanley Zdonik (advisors)[11]

Start-ups

Palmer has since been involved in other projects to advance the use and management of Big Data, including the creation of SciDB, an open-source database management system for scientific research.[12]

In total, Palmer has helped start, fund or found more than 50 companies[13] involved in enterprise software, analytics, Internet, ecommerce and biotech [14], including two that resulted in IPOs (pcOrder.com[15] and Infinity Pharmaceuticals[16]).

To promote a start-up ecology in the Boston/Cambridge region, Palmer founded Koa Labs Start-Up Club, located in Harvard Square.[17]

Most recently, he co-founded Tamr with Stonebraker. Tamr enables enterprises to connect and leverage all their data, and was originally backed by more than $40 million in financing led by Google Ventures and New Enterprise Associates. In the summer of 2015, HP Ventures, MassMutual Ventures, and Thomson Reuters participated in a second round of financing for $25.2 million.[18]

Investment

Palmer has been a founding Board of Directors (BOD) member, BOD member, investor or advisor for companies involved in big data, cloud computing, crowdsourcing and biotech. Most recently he has served as a founding board member for Firecracker (co-founded by entrepreneur Ben Williams, who previously founded Firefly Health with Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin)[19]; JobFig; Recorded Future [20] (founded by computer scientist Christopher Ahlberg with backing from Rich Miner of Google Ventures); and Upstart. Additionally, he is a BOD member of Cloudant, which was sold to IBM in 2014[21]

He is an investor in Rest Devices (maker of Mimo Baby Monitor), Apptegic (now Evergage)[22], GiveForward, Sharespost, VoltDB, and Yapstone; and an advisor to Affectiva, BlueFin Labs (acquired by Twitter)[23], Forma Therapeutics, Medio Systems (acquired by Here)[24], Syapse, and Uptown Networks.

Research

The Computer Science and Artificial Laboraty (CSAIL) has appointed Palmer in the fall of 2015 as a Research Affiliate in Computer Science focusing on database systems.[citation needed][25]

Awards and recognition

Palmer was recognized as 2013 Angel of the Year by the New England Venture Capital Association[26].

CIO Magazine included Palmer in its CIO 100 list for 2004[27]

Personal

In, 1993, Palmer married artist Amy Dunham. They have four children.
