Ang Cheng Guan

Ang Cheng Guan (born 1963[citation needed]) is a Singaporean historian and academic known for his scholarship on the Cold War in Southeast Asia, the Vietnam War, and Singapore’s foreign and security policy. He is currently Professor of History and Head of the Humanities Division at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore.[citation needed]

Early life and education

Ang was born in Singapore.[citation needed] He earned a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in History from the National University of Singapore and later received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in History from the Australian National University.[citation needed]

Academic career

Ang began his teaching career at the National Institute of Education, NTU, where he has held positions including Head of the History Programme and Associate Dean of Research.[citation needed] His research emphasises the agency of Southeast Asian states during the global Cold War, challenging interpretations that treat the region primarily as a superpower battleground.[citation needed]

Ang’s work focuses on:

  • Southeast Asia and the Cold War – examining how regional governments shaped post-war security and diplomacy.
  • The Vietnam War – using Vietnamese, American, and regional archival sources to analyse decision-making in Hanoi and neighbouring capitals.
