Angela Garcia
Angela Garcia is an anthropologist and author known for her studies of addiction, violence, and family life in the United States and Mexico. She is a professor in the Anthropology Department at Stanford University.
Profile Garcia completed her BA summa cum laude in Anthropology at University of California Berkeley in 1997. In 2007, she received her PhD in Social Anthropology at Harvard University, working with Arthur Kleinman and Byron Good.
Garcia is the author of the book The Pastoral Clinic: Addiction and Dispossession Along the Rio Grande (2010), which explored the relationship between colonial history and intergenerational heroin addiction in northern New Mexico. The Pastoral Clinic was widely reviewed in the academic and popular press and was awarded the Victor Turner Prize for Ethnographic Writing and the PEN Center USA University of California Press Exceptional First Book Award.
Garcia’s second book explores underground drug treatment programs in Mexico and their relationship to the ongoing drug war. It is under contract with Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
Prior to graduate school, Garcia worked at Project Inform, where she directed Project WISE, a treatment advocacy program for women living with HIV/AIDS. In the 1990s, she was active in San Francisco’s Latino cultural and queer literary scenes and gave readings of her poetry at venues such as the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts and Luna Sea Women’s Performance Project.
